Is It OK For A Christian Husband to Gently Beat His Wife?
Over the last several weeks, some ‘concerned’ readers sent sporadic emails to our intern staff about a column where we discussed the tendency of wives to get a bit loquacious at inappropriate moments, and how a good husband may go about politely handling a sassy woman.
I forwarded the following suggestion to the community:
“…sometimes in marriage the grave and solemn responsibility to politely tell the wife to be quiet and stay in her place falls upon every husband.
Being fickle and temperamental, women do not always respond to gentle words so at times a swift, backhanded slap across the face must be applied to them. This usually gets their attention and sets order straight.”
Now, I expressed the seriousness of such a situation and indicated that when cause arises, where a man must put an uppity feminist acting wife in her place, that the actions should be loving, kind and swift; much like the wrath of God when he warns you to stop sinning.
Unfortunately, some liberals out there got the wrong idea and suggested that I promoted some form of sot-ridden domestic abuse, one even having the audacity to suggest I’m ‘a drunk barbarian hick masquerading under the guise of educated morality’.
There is nothing drunk or barbaric about God’s law.
1 Corinthians 11:8 – 9
8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man;
9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.
1 Corinthians 14:34 – 35
34 women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says.
35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.
A man’s home is his holy sanctuary, as is his body, and therefore it is a man’s responsibility to ensure God’s law reigns supreme in his home and marriage.
Now do not get me wrong. God or the Bible does not condone beating a wife to the point that she is hurt. That is just wrong, sick and immoral. Men should love a wife as he loves his own body, lest a man be struck down by the mighty hand of God himself.
What cannot be overlooked is the fact that woman was given to man, as a gift from God. This gift is personalized via marriage.
A woman may only leave her husband if he cheats on her or abandons her, and anything else is subject to scrutiny; this includes giving your wife a loving tap on the cheek when she gets out of line.
There is a level of discernment one must use. The Redcoats over in Britain, who have a penchant for the dramatic, hired Hollywood actress Keira Knightley to show the wrong way for a husband to treat a wife. Let us take a look.
Now that is immoral and even if your wife cheats on you, which if this was a few hundred years ago I would personally help you stone her to death for, this day and age you just do not beat a woman like that. It is sick.
Instead, you just give them…a little Godly tap on the cheek. A reminder of who is in charge and that your wrath can be great, but for your loved one you show warning in your mercy.
Coincidentally, Sir Sean Connery understands this concept and explained it in an interview with Barbara Walters.

Perhaps you can read the article? I agree with Chuck’s column and he did not advocate physical abuse. Much like if a husband spares the rod he will spoil the child, at times I think a husband must apply this adage to all of his family, including the wife.
Just like you do not hit your kids in an abusive way, you do not hit your wife in such a way. You may give them a loving tap though, or do you think people should not discipline their kids as well?

If you do, then promptly go and shove your head somewhere that I shall not mention. No husband should beat their wives, as it’s damaging to the love that they share. If they’re married in the first place, then they got married because they love each other in most situations. Beating a spouse is a betrayal of trust, and it is morally degrading for the one who’s beating the other. It’s just not right to top it off. Do you know what happens when that bond of trust is broken? Divorce. Meaning more sorrow and pain.

Also, make the hallmark mistakes of internet idiots: confuse the words “there”, “they’re” and “their”, for example. The words “too”, “two” and “to” also — which I noticed you got that one, nice work!
But your main failure was in using punctuation too much (most dumb asses only use a period and exclamation mark — never a comma, colon, semi-colon or quotation mark), going overboard with misspelling and structuring your thoughts into sentences too well. Just look at comments of morons on Youtube and learn by example! The reason I know this stuff is because I used to write masquerade letters to mess with friends and family, and some of them (after I told them it was me) told me they didn’t believe it because I made the same mistakes you did. What about the scripture that commands a husband to love his wife as Christ loved the church giving His life for it. Furthermore, if you are a TRUE bible scholar you will know that a lot of scripture in the bible are historical and written in accordance to what was going on at the time. In Corinth, which the letter to the Corinthians speaks about the church was being ran basically by ceratain women because the women had money (likely through prostiution as the area was known for the worship of Aphrodite, senusality and luxery) so since they had money and were running things the church leaders were being admonished for allowing this to happen. It not a case of women being inferior to men but a classic case of (s)he who puts the most money in church rules. This should never happen in church. When Jesus pointed out to the apostles it was more honorabe that a poor widow woman gave more when she gave a mite ( a piece of money that was equal to less than our modern penny) then when the religious leaders gave gold because they had more to give. That is why the church at Corinth was being admonished for allowing women to speak. The women did not speak from God Given authority but from the arrogance of what they had monetarily. Yes a woman is supposed to submit to her husband as the church should submit to Christ. If a husband loves his wife in a Christlike manner he is NOT going to beat her. Furthermore, the bible says once people recieve Christ as their personal Lord and Savior there is neither Jew nor Greek, male nor female, slave nor free- we become one in Christ. I hate to say it but as a Christian I can see why a lot of people don’t recieve Christ. They hear the nutty stuff us so called Christians say. Not trying to be judgmental but really. Chuck I hate people like you for over 10 years I was in an abusive relationship adn my husband used the Bible as his defense and when i went in private to my church pastor for counseling you know what he said? This makes me so happy to be an Atheist!!! My equally atheist boyfriend was repulsed by your article Mr. Reagan as were many people on the atheist reddit this was posted on. In fact I don’t know any secular person who would think that smacking someone man or woman to get them in line is OK in any context no matter the situation that arises (which is no doubt at the man’s discretion).

EVERYONE needs a good beating from time to time. This being the month of observing domestic abuse, take the extra time out to find a domestically abused individual at say your local mall, let them know that they probably deserved what they got, and shake the hand of the abuser more than likely standing next to them.

2) The actual article itself. I absolutely loathe all forms of discrimination. I’m quite privileged, coming from a middle class British background, my IQ is 134 and I go to a good grammar school. At that school everyone gets respected whatever gender or whatever. There are just about as many Boys as Girls, and on the whole I would have no doubt that the girls would get jobs at least as good as, if not significantly better, than most of the boys, they aren’t in anyway incompetent. Also the black students aren’t in anyway inferior, and there’s even a small homosexual population at the school (I’m a white heterosexual male so there’s absolutely no bias in this what so ever). There is no fucking superior race/sexuality/gender/whatever.
If you and your wife disagree on a matter then she is just as likely to be right as you are, if you give her even the gentlest of taps to keep her in line then you are forcing your opinion, which may well be wrong, on her. The only difference between you two is the guy (probably) is physically stronger, and that does not make it ok to use this advantage to control your wife. Your supposed to love each other, not fucking settle arguments by coming to blows.

I just wanted to say I am praying for all of you…its terrible to hear so many supposedly christian women seemingly justifying their disobedience of their husbands. Lets look at this logically; if our lord and saviour had not wanted to grant men the responsibility of maintaining his word in the family, then he would not have given them greater intelligence and physical strength. Its only logical that if God had intended women to gently discipline men, he would have given them the superior strength. I would never condone forcible violence, but a simple sharp and prompt slap on a woman’s face or buttocks (as practised by many of my parishoner’s within their families) is a responsibility given to husbands by God and I frankly condemn any man who fails in his christian duty to do so and uphold his word. Christian Wives next time your husband gently disciplines you, remember how hard it is for him; the most christian thing for you to do is to apologise to him for making it necessary, not criticize him with fashionable, modern, un-christian and uncharitable arguements about domestic violence. As a Pastor and a husband I know the difference – we are talking here about a gentle reminder of god’s laws. Two very different things. God Bless.

One particulary person who caught my eye was ‘Adam Nelson’ who does not seem to be joking (even though most of us want to believe that). So to Adam Nelson:
I’m going to start off by saying although you seem to be brought up a different way, what you are saying is immorally wrong. The story of Adam and Eve for one matter is usually interpreted incorrectly. It was a story to let people know it is not good to fall into temptation. And although ‘man’ is used in the bible a lot it refers to both females and males just as the tern ‘human’ does. Another point is that you as a human cannot prove God is a he or a her. In the early gospels God is said to be a she; however now God is refered as ‘the father’ or a he. We as humans cannot fully comprehend what God is exactly, since we have not experianced God’s power ourselves. Another thing- you say that a man correcting his wife or leading her away from temptation by a tap is not abuse. That statement is unintelligent. Both men and women fall into temptation (usually men fall into larger temptations such as stealing or murder). Sure, most men are physically stronger than women; however that is not proof enough that men are better. It is not a man’s job to keep his wife from temptation. Most men (and I do not mean offence) base their judgement on rash decisions and ther wife usually calms or comforts them. It is not a woman’s job to cook for her husband- it is because she is usually better at it. it is not a woman’s job to clean and watch over their children- it is because children are closer to their mothers because they were in her womb, and because women are usually neater. A woman is not a gift to a man- The man see’s her as a companion as she sees him as one. You, Adam, have got your facts mixed. When a woman marries a man, she becomes a gift unto the man just as a man was made as a gift unto God. Children are a gift unto parents.
It is a man’s responsibility to lead his family along the path of righteousness. Even if a woman deviates and partakes in sin, it is the man’s job to show his family the right way again.
You can do this with words. “Sweetheart, do not watch immoral tv shows they are bad for you and bad influence for the kids.”
“Yes, dear, you’re right,” would be the correct response. Now some discussions could end there, but there are some women who just keep pushing and like Eve when she let Satan tempt her, will keep trying to invite the devil in.
It’s in cases like those where a man must be more assertive. Adam failed in that regard right from the start, and God punished him for it just like he’ll punish any man who doesn’t keep his family in line.
