Do you Really Think You’re That Funny, Stephen Colbert?

Colberty

Yes, I’m in on the joke. The Colbert Report fake news show is satire. He’s mocking Republicans, Christians, Pro-Lifers, those who believe in the sanctity of marriage and anyone else who doesn’t memorize Rahm Emmanuel’s daily talking points. He pretends to be a Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly all rolled into one muscled and charming package, while snickering like some mud-smeared child behind the schoolyard jungle gym with his fellow travelers– Jon Stewart, Conan O’Brien and Tina Fey. News reader Keith Olbermann cries his way through the anarchist democrat worldview coherently enough for most common Americans to get a taste of how wrongheaded these proto-socialists of the left can be. But Stephen Colbert’s real danger is that he hides behind parody, never revealing his genuine intentions or emotions . The only thing he teaches is contempt. So journalists like me (let alone the rest of you) have a hard time understanding and rebutting his true values. To most, his parody is unimpeachable and no newsman has dared take down this sanctimonious, vile-tongued hairdo for what he really is.

Well, hold on to your keyboards America because today I’m going to do precisely that!

Let me state this very clearly: Stephen Colbert represents one of the most dangerous trends in America next to Islamic terrorism today! He is slipping a deadly tonic of anarchy and immorality to our children. His nightly show is like an Al Qaeda training camp, indoctrinating fragile minds into a fanatical hatred of American values and arming them with the doublespeak, laziness and opportunism to destroy this country’s economic and moral foundation. Materialism is his Lord, not spirituality, nor any commitment to bettering this country. And Colbert’s need for media attention and control over the young is insatiable.

Hipster

Mr. Colbert broke into television as the painfully homosexual high school teacher in Strangers With Candy, starring race-baiter Amy Sedaris, a real life pot-smoking former Lesbian prostitute. The show was a buffet dinner of neurotic depravity that sadly found comedy in sexually transmitted diseases, rape, aging, racism, lesbianism, mental illness, Native Americans and more. From there, he joined pundit-perennially-never-ready-for-primetime Jon Stewart as an uptight news reporter. His man of the street interviews were sickly, almost Candid Camera meets Tucker Carlson meets Richard Simmons. They were childish and salacious. Did he ever shed a tear for all those poor ordinary Americans he tricked into making fools of themselves on camera? No, the man only lusts for more televised attention.

Hipster

When Colbert was introduced to President George W. Bush a few years back, he took the opportunity to grab the podium and turn the spotlight on himself, unleashing a 20-minute tirade of unprofessional and unfunny insults at the President and his wonderful wife, Laura. The two, so incredibly sophisticated and kind, nervously smiled but died a little inside as the night wore on and on and on. It was a truly inappropriate speech and the audience of journalists was filled with scowls and then outright booing. The next day, the liberal world press roundly condemned the so-called comic for his un-American media whoring.

This TV talker even claims to be a man of the Catholic faith, but shows such disrespect for the institution of Christianity and his very own Papal leader, that this is quite possibly another lame joke. In light of the tremendous problems facing that particular church which is ripe with homosexuality and rape in its ranks, he shows zero compassion. He just loves kicking the old dog when it’s down. As long as the cameras are on, that is.

Hipster

Frighteningly enough, Stephen Colbert is now using his television show The Colbert Report as a platform to foist his liberal and self-aggrandizing views on the country. He has derided the free speech of people who have been invited to share their thoughts at the health care town halls, he enjoyed public drunkenness with homosexual democrat Congressman Jared Polis, he had frank discussions about cocaine use with democrat Congressman Rob Wexler, he went to Iraq to advocate directly to the troops for overtly homosexual servicemen, he tongue-baths every liberal academic with a poorly written book who slithers onto his set, he mocks Black people saying don’t care about race, and he has never once supported the War on Terror.

Hipster

Also, and this begs a larger question concerning the propriety of the attention he pays to young people, Colbert likes to drink beer and eats chips on his show. Is this some pathetic act of solidarity with his stoned-out-of-their-minds college student audience (who is decades younger than him, by the way). Or does it reveal a deeper character flaw, a lustful need to surround himself with children? Michael Jackson is another celebrity who argued that there was nothing wrong with this type of behavior, giving kids toys, Jesus Juice and a lot of attention. I should say for now we must give Stephen Colbert the benefit of the doubt. He has not yet been formally questioned or charged regarding this and it could be just another phase of his megalomania.

In interviews and on the show, Colbert professes to have invented the type of parody comedy he performs. But critics universally point to George Carlin, the man who taught Generation X to be sarcastic and rude to their parents. Colbert’s work is not even that original. He would be nowhere if Limbaugh, O’Reilly and Coulter had not become so important and famous in today’s political arena. They paved the way for this coat-tail-riding one-trick pony.

Hipster

Over the last few years, Colbert has subtly been building a cult of personality, Stalin-style! With trinkets, books (remember Mao’s Little Red Book anyone? Anyone?) and artwork. The paintings he has commissioned, much like the ones we saw of Saddam Hussein all over Iraq, portray him as an iconic and heroic figure, draped in the flag and representing some great promise for America. Well, I’ll tell you, Adolph Hitler promised a whole lot to Germany. Anyone remember how that ended? America’s youths don’t… Cults of Personality are always dangerous, they try to get people to disregard the real issues and throw their unbridled and sexualized devotion behind one man, no matter what rabbit hole he may lead them down. Much like Timothy Leary, he has spiked the nation’s water and is leading our children, as innocent as Alice, into a world of evil queens, Mad Hatters and Tweedledums (homosexuals, socialists and weak-minded liberals). You may laugh at his jokes now, but where will we be as a nation when the children force-fed Stephen Colbert’s nasty demagoguery of deception grow up? How will that generation look at the responsibilities of being an American in the age of global terror and overpopulation when all they have been taught to do is lie and snicker?

  • Thank you for this article, Mr. Billings. I really hate Stephen Colbert and I figure God does too. He’s in cahoots with Jon Stewart and the pale blight Conan O’Brien, who is twice the liberal of Jay Leno. At least Jay Leno was not homosexual and had a decent hobby in his space time.

Also notice how Colbert is feeling up a geriatric in that first picture. Pretty gross.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 11 Thumb down 26

    • “Also notice how Colbert is feeling up a geriatric in that first picture. Pretty gross.”

There is no ‘feeling up’ coming from Colbert, only from the lady, who I believe, is a famous comedian.

I only felt like reading the first 3/4ish before I felt sorry for you Billings, then I just stopped, but I will post some things I have to comment on.

“The only thing he teaches is contempt. So journalists like me (let alone the rest of you) have a hard time understanding and rebutting his true values.”

Please tell me you didn’t major in journalism in college? That would make me sad :C, then we know that colleges are really starting to suck at teaching people.

“He is slipping a deadly tonic of anarchy and immorality to our children.”

      Don’t let them watch?

“Mr. Colbert broke into television as the painfully homosexual high school teacher in Strangers With Candy, ”

They key thing you must notice is that he was ACTING, he’s not a homosexual, and you don’t even have to condone homosexuality to act as one in media. I’m pretty sure Colbert is for gay marriage though, I don’t know, it’s not really my business, which it shouldn’t be yours either.

“When Colbert was introduced to President George W. Bush a few years back, he took the opportunity to grab the podium and turn the spotlight on himself, unleashing a 20-minute tirade of unprofessional and unfunny insults at the President and his wonderful wife, Laura.”

I can bet 50$ that he was reading off a script and that the Bush’s had seen the script before.

“The two, so incredibly sophisticated and kind, nervously smiled but died a little inside as the night wore on and on and on”

I’ve got a few corrections to make to this:

“The two, so incredibly unsophisticated and unkind, nervous twats smiled but died a little inside as the night wore on and on and on”

Also, did you ask them if they ‘died a little inside’, which I think would also be against the bible due to them being into witchcraft.

“Frighteningly enough, Stephen Colbert is now using his television show The Colbert Report as a platform to foist his liberal and self-aggrandizing views on the country.”

That’s bad why? I’m pretty sure there are other tv shows that get A LOT more views than his that are A LOT more liberal.

Yeah, that’s about where I read up to before I just couldn’t take your fail anymore :C. I don’t feel like spell checking this either so !!!!!

      • Joe, you are such a fool I don’t know where to begin! First off, I think of the point of this article is to get more people to realize this show is inappropriate for children and that it effects young adults in a real negative way and we should all pay much more attention to this. Secondly, the fact that he played a homosexual, whether it was “acting” or not is beside the point. Colbert willingly took part in some immoral vaudeville show. Like a police record, it’s evidence of his past crimes and ethical lapses. And it’s completely true that the vast majority of his guests are flaming so hot LIBERALS. I don’t know where you dig up your facts, but you’re completely crazy! And so what, Bill O’Reilly sells some very handsome traveling coffee mugs, so what? That is very different than this cult that Colbert has created. I remember Manson and Jim Jones, David Koresh- and that wasn’t fun for any parent!

        • “Colbert willingly took part in some immoral vaudeville show. Like a police record, it’s evidence of his past crimes and ethical lapses.”

Last time I checked, it wasn’t a crime to be a homosexual, nor was it a crime to portray a homosexual.

Ohhh… I remember, in that video where she was doing stuff with you, yeah… fun times.

You guys need to realize that this country isn’t just conservative anymore, it’s becoming pretty liberal, thank all that is no god, so you guys need to get your heads outta your butts.

          • Yes, our country is falling away from its conservative roots. You know what else is going on? Violence in increasing in our public schools. Our nation’s economy lays in shambles. Families are hungry and without healthcare.

We are not safe because terrorists seek to destroy our way of life. Disease runs rampant and teenage pregnancy highlight the sham of Hollywood fornication and empty advertisements have forced onto our kids.

Our nation is falling apart because we have fallen away from the body of Christ.

          • I hope that I have reached a few of your Colbert fanatics and maybe shed some light on issues that have been percolating in your hearts. There is much to question about this idol of yours and what his true goals are. I have to wonder after the foundation of his morality, the truth behind the pancake makeup. His history as a comedian playing up perversity for laughs should give you an idea of that.

I think a few years of growth, of having the responsibilities of a job and a wife and eventually a family help you mature beyond these types of obsessions and fantasies. Just like girls play with dolls, and then grow up to want the real thing- their own precious child!- I pray that some of you will expand beyond this fascination with the little man on your flat screens. You will see there is so much more beyond the doors to your dens, that there are serious questions of life and faith each and every one of us has a innate need to address sometime in our life. And don’t wait for a deathbed conversion. You can look at the majesty of faith now, pick up a Bible and absorb His word. It may change you, make you better. One grain of sand at a time!

          • Stephenson you talk like Stewart and Colbert are our gods. That we’re too stupid to see past their ‘indoctrination’ (as you seem to see it). We do not think this way.

All these men (and their shows) do is rail against the Christian and ‘Right’ group-think that rallies against any other point of view. Their war is on ‘stupid’ and ‘hypocrisy’… There’s plenty of that to go around, and The Daily Show and The Colbert Report address it on both sides. If they’re attacking you consistently, ask yourself: Am I being stupid, mean (restricting healthcare to 40 million people (and denying insurance to people with pre-existing conditions) so insurance companies can make a 40% profit) and hypocritical (why aren’t you supporting ‘your president’ now)?

Don’t you find it worrisome that people like Abe above immediately reach for fundamentalist positions that you would rally against if they came from a different religious base? Abe: Do you really think Colbert should be stoned? Seriously you’re just showing the rest of American (and the world) how nut-job crazy the right can be sometimes. Do you think that your religion is better than everybody else’s? How about at least living the values (thou shalt not kill?) you espouse to everyone else…

Of course this won’t influence any of your regular readers, because they already know everything they need to know. The Book told them so.

          • AussieCraig, Isn’t it fascinating that when I dared criticize this man, legions of you came out of the woodwork to cry over his glory? You say you’re not fanatical about him but the array of comments here clearly proves otherwise. You may not have an altar to him in your home (those surely some of you do), you attention, the money you spend and how many of you his shows you watch show a great deal of attachment to this man and his goals. That is taken the next step, when you vote or donate money or do whatever based on the chatter he fills your heads with. I find it ironic that I was first attacked by a man who knew Colbert’s precise vacation schedule (accusing me of being weak by publishing this piece while the man was in the Vineyard) and now you’re saying that you fans barely know the man. So which is it?

The people who agree with you are the same people who agreed with you before.

It’s funny that should you mention that people like Colbert will slide in obscurity and irrelevance. The fact is that people like you will decrease in numbers with every new generation.

But what bothers me is that people like you think that people watch him to fill a void , lack of a religion or something, and that the show will steer people towards terrorism or something else evil.

The fact that Colbert and Stewart have a job says enough about the quality of ‘real’ news networks like Fox( IU study finds The Daily Show with Jon Stewart to be as substantive as network news).

Congratulations Jan, you would restrict your own child’s access to information, communication, and more importantly a different view than your own, and why? All because you don’t agree with one person, on one 30 minute show on a channel called Comedy Central. Also, you call someone a pervert because they have a different opinion than you, you are not only showing unbelievable narrow mindedness, but also, you just seem like a bad parent for trying to control your child’s life so much that you would smother and distort their view of the real world.

For this you win the following:Kevin Spacey’s Extremist Parent Award!

Give yourself a round of applause then go shower your child in propaganda and extremist values! Way to go you!

          • I think the power of the two men is in what draws most of their viewers to them consistently. Where else in mainstream media (in the US and elsewhere) do you have a program with the freedom to talk about the comments of our public officials by comparing their changing arguments. The Daily Show in particular does not let people make stupid and consistently inconsistent comments about a topic without showing them back to back with footage of their contradictory comments made last month (etc)… The fact that they aren’t a slave to the news cycle is what makes them so good… That and they have great interviews…

Also: I get that Christwire is a satire site, and I think that in many ways you are like Colbert. Comments here (I would suspect) are often aimed at those that don’t get it…

I agree a lot of the left go too far, and you’re right. Mentioning Colbert or Jon Stewart in a negative article (or any article) is (given how the internet works) a great way to draw in heaps of viewers (and not all of them reasonable). (I wonder how this article compares to previous ones you’ve written in number of views). But I think the left goes too far because of the same fear of a lack of voice that drives scared seniors (whipped into a frenzy by Fox) to yell ‘Get your government hands off my medicaid’… But can you rationally tell me that the left isn’t fairer in letting other voices be heard?

Janicefun: Their agenda is not letting you steamroll your agenda. It’s not JUST your country, not matter how much you wish otherwise… Could you tell my why you consider these guys so dangerous?

In all serious though, we shouldn’t be so divided. Let’s treat each other with a bit of respect? (Like the correspondence dinner? It WAS a roast… and you can’t tell me Bush didn’t have that coming…) Besides if the US doesn’t have Australia as a strong Ally then you’re down to one…

p.s. I think all that my postings here prove is that this is more fun than my thesis… :-)

I don’t know where to begin with you Rodney King-like speech, but it makes little sense and is even less fun to read. You should stick to the beaches and chasing girls your own age, my friend, and not the pursuits of the mind.

Again, you bowls of nuts like to bring up the word, “Freedom” whenever it suits you, but here in the United State that freedom came at very great costs, two hundred years of violent struggle and economic cost. We are a beacon to the world for what we have achieved but there are others fearful of what we represent and will do anything to tear us down. Freedom, you see, comes with responsibilities. And it is those responsibilities that I am addressing here. I don’t mean to shut up Colbert, merely to provide a counter-argument to his inexplicable popularity. Most people just don’t know any better. They haven’t looked behind the curtain at the true Stephen Colbert and what his examples means for the health of America. It may be difficult to understand these things coming from Australia, a country of white people basically handed several thousand miles of beautiful coastline and a free pass on the last hundred years of history’s major events.

Or at least I could espouse half truths and generalisations about the crazy right, and you could play on our convict past and assume I’m under 30 and spend my time chasing bikini babes and getting sh-tfaced, and somewhere in between we could realise we’re both standing about ten feet apart looking over each other’s shoulder worried about the extremists standing a long way behind either of us.

But Americans don’t own the word freedom. We’ve bled in the same venues for the same geo-political BS in the last 100 years as you, but the difference is our misadventures really aren’t in the same league (you’ve had more time to practice to be fair)… Perhaps the difference is Colbert isn’t that popular here, or Americans (yep, ALL of them ;) ) don’t have the same scepticism as the Aussies… (known locally as the ‘Get f-cked mate!’ quotient)… Are Americans (Red and Blue) to use to believing their selected MSM mouth pieces???

No one with any sense would argue the Australian record is unblemished… but do you really think you’re still the Beacon of Awesome that you like to pat yourselves on the back for?

p.s. Don’t hate Australia for its beauty, and I won’t lump every American political mis-adventure together… hell I even agree with some of them.

          • Within the last year, there have been several times when I could physically feel something while I was praying or while others were praying for me. I would describe it as warmth or almost an electricity-like vibration, usually in my arms. I have a few times prayed with someone while placing my hand on their shoulder, and I can feel a kind of tingly energy in my arm then. (Two friends I have prayed with said they felt it while I prayed for them.)

I am at home in my faith. It has brought so much joy to my life.

I felt the need to share that with you here.

          • Again, I want to say it is gratifying and beautiful to me that so many have come out here or written in support of my points about frenzied and dangerous adoration of Stephen Colbert. His influence is a blight upon America’s character. We, as a nation, have so much more going for us than hate and sarcasm. There are great and hallowed traditions in the Unites States that we should openly embrace and celebrate. We are the light of the world and that comes with a great responsibility. It is my hope that the next generation of children will inherit this country with responsibility and a moral direction. I hope the Colberts of this era will continue their slide into obscurity and irrelevance. I can tell from the comments here that we are in the early stages but there are positive signs that many of you are changing your minds, opening up your hearts to a greater Faith.

God bless you, every one of you!

I want to say, I love the poster, straight out of WW2 propaganda pics, even the font gives it that ’40′s charm’. Now onto business, America was first settled by Native Americans, who were not Christian, and then had their land subsequently stolen by Europeans. However since you will say that you are referring to The United States, as opposed to our continent as a whole, America was founded by a congress of peoples, several of whom were either Agnostic or Atheist (Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams to name a few) so the idea that this nation was founded by Christians is ridiculous. However if you would like to say this continent in general was settled by Christians, please see my first argument. Besides, the United States has that fun “separation of Church and State” thing going for it, which means that, No, Christian values and morals should not be the only ones taken into consideration when running a nation, and to suggest that this glorious nation should spurn other religions is both preposterous and downright stupid, nations and peoples do not progress and evolve by hiding from advances into the future, peoples that refuse to learn new things, and try new ideas are destroyed by people who welcome change.

You, sir, are the worst kind of Christian. The kind who forms an opinion and claims that God holds that very same opinion. The kind who backs up his arguments by saying that “God is on my side.”

Sir, if you had any clue as to what your religion meant (at least the New Testament version, since the Old Testament God was a jealous, ruthless jerk), there is no room in God’s heart for hatred. To claim hatred for Mr. Colbert and then to follow it up with the suggestion that you and God are tight on this idea is the downright total perversion of your self-proclaimed belief system.

Go read your New Testament again. I’ve certainly read my share. Then go out and try to put into practice those ideas that are actually put forth in the New Testament and hope/pray to be a better person. I, for one, have little hope for you.

I don’t see the christian, or any for that matter, god turning anyone away because they made jokes on a television show. To say that a man with a tv show is corrupting our children is complete and total ignorance on a parents part. It is the parent’s duty to see that their child grows up knowing right and wrong, not a man on the television. COMEDY CENTRAL. Key word there is COMEDY.

“But Stephen Colbert’s real danger is that he hides behind parody, never revealing his genuine intentions or emotions” -Its a comedy… The whole show is a news parody.. How thick are you???

“Stephen Colbert represents one of the most dangerous trends in America next to Islamic terrorism today! He is slipping a deadly tonic of anarchy and immorality to our children” -Kids don’t watch regular news, so even id he DID corrupt people *which is really fucking funny by the way* why on earth would they watch Colbert?

“found comedy in sexually transmitted diseases, rape, aging, racism, lesbianism, mental illness, Native Americans and more.” -ROFLLLLLLL This IS funny!

  • “He is slipping a deadly tonic of anarchy and immorality to our children.”

    *facepalm*

Just like “South Park” and “Family Guy”, “The Colbert Report” is not intended for children. In fact, I’m sure that “The Colbert Report” draws even less of its audience from children than do “South Park” and “Family Guy”, considering how it’s not animated and 100% of its content is about current events. Kids who sneak behind their parents’ backs (and some kids have such lousy parents that they don’t have to sneak at all) and watch “South Park”, do so for the fart jokes. Trust me, kids don’t give a crap about a guy sitting behind his desk, making jokes about Helen Thomas.

“the show was a buffet dinner of neurotic depravity that sadly found comedy in sexually transmitted diseases, rape, aging, racism, lesbianism, mental illness, Native Americans and more.”

As someone who has watched the entire series and movie of “Strangers With Candy” several times, I can tell you that there were no episodes that dealt with or made comedy of rape or aging. As for lesbianism, there was never an entire episode devoted to the issue of lesbianism; it was mentioned several times and hinted at many times that Amy Sedaris’ character, Jerry Blank, was bisexual. She even mentioned it herself once, saying “I like the pole and the hole”. However, there was never any more talk about homosexuality or bisexuality than simple hints.

“It was a truly inappropriate speech and the audience of journalists was filled with scowls and then outright booing.”

I watched it several times, and I don’t recall any scowling and booing.

“he tongue-baths every liberal academic with a poorly written book who slithers onto his set”

Have you ever even watched the show? Colbert makes everybody look like a fool on his show, whether they be liberal or conservative.

“and he has never once supported the War on Terror.”

Yes, because not supporting the murder of hundreds of thousands of civilians is so evil.

“Colbert likes to drink beer and eats chips on his show.”

You make it sounds as though during every episode he pops open a beer and a bag of chips and munches as he talks. That is not how he does it at all. Anytime he has a drink in his hand, whether it be alcohol or soda, or opens a bag of chips, he is referencing some news item. It’s a comedy show, you fool.

“Or does it reveal a deeper character flaw, a lustful need to surround himself with children?”

Yes, because only children like beer and doritos.

“Michael Jackson is another celebrity who argued that there was nothing wrong with this type of behavior, giving kids toys, Jesus Juice and a lot of attention.”

Um…unless I’m mistaken, you invited Wayward on a “camping trip” for young boys. I’d be doing a background check on you must faster than on Stephen Colbert.

“In interviews and on the show, Colbert professes to have invented the type of parody comedy he performs.”

    He’s JOKING!

“Over the last few years, Colbert has subtly been building a cult of personality, Stalin-style! With trinkets, books (remember Mao’s Little Red Book anyone? Anyone?) and artwork.”

Hmm, I wonder who could have inspired him to do so…

    • Claire, I must have dated myself in this article. By “children” I meant anyone younger than 30. At my age, everyone seems so young! And yes Family Guy and South Park are truly crude little shows, but they are clearly meant as such and not programs about news and politics.

As for Colbert and the White House Press Dinner, you have your facts wrong. Watching a few clips on Jon Stewart or Youtube doesn’t give you the whole picture (nor the entire audio). A few journalists present talked and wrote about the outrage in the hall that night, but most wanted to forget how awful it was. In fact, there was very little reporting on the whole fiasco at first, it really was that bad. But news gets recycled and cleansed and when it did come out days later, it had Colbert’s stamp all over it. It reputably made him look good!

And while it doesn’t surprise me that you’re a Strangers With Candy fan, I again find your thoughts far from the truth. I’d rather not dive into that immensely morally offensive and disturbing show, it does magically manage to offend every single one of the senses each episode… Sorry, but on second thought, I’d rather not research further into its vile plotlines on what promises to be a beautiful Sunday today.

Finally, I do find Mr. Colbert’s beer drinking and Doritos eating offputting. It’s unseemly to watch a man do that unscripted on television. And it’s unpleasant to hear. Colbert often makes wink-wink jokes about pot smoking and other drugs to his college audience and they really do cheer each time in the studio. I can only draw the conclusions I draw from the evidence before me. It strikes me as one part of a larger pattern of his. That is, to get closer to the young, to insert himself in their lives. And that just doesn’t sit right with me. Nor should it with you.

Oh, I see, you tell me that I’m wrong about the facts of a show that I love, and yet the day is too beautiful for you to tell me exactly what I have wrong about it. How convenient.

Well, judging from your picture, you enjoy your beer and Doritos just as much as Colbert does.

“That is, to get closer to the young, to insert himself in their lives. And that just doesn’t sit right with me. Nor should it with you.”

Sure, so he may enjoy having a college audience. At least he’s not inviting young boys out to the forest so that he may “minister” to them.

        • Stephan Colbert is incredibly smart and his show is something that is surely needed in American (and worldwide). Someone needs to call out the hypocrisy of the Christian right in calling for the persecution of (and moral imposition upon) those of other faiths and points of view. His larger than life persona does include many outlandish things (like the Propaganda photos and the recursive picture of him holding his Emmy) but these are done with a wink that the audience understands is mocking the holier than thou patriotism that emanates from the right…

The latest stupid call from the right is that the USA doesn’t have the money for healthcare reform even as it has finished spending $3 Trillion dollars on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Where was the outrage for this? When it was American blood and treasure being spent on something the right pillared the left for not supporting? When will the right wake up to the money (in this case Healthcare money) and fake outrage that is driving the Republican’s political agenda?

You guys seriously look loony from this side of the Pacific, and trust me this is from one of your closest allies… Be careful, you don’t have that many left.

          Cheers.

      • EXCUSE ME, do you REALIZE how patronizing calling anyone under 30 a child is? I am 20 years old. I can vote, I can serve in the military, I can take part in the lottery. I must see a physician, and not a pediatrician. I am a legal adult as prescribed by American law. DO NOT call me, nor my peers children when we are not. That is a LIE and you know it. Don’t say children when you mean 18-35. Say young adults and give us the proper labels at the very least.

Even then, *GASP* WE HAVE BRAINS. We can make decisions on our own that are *GASP* LIBERAL just as much as we can make decisions that are conservative. Frankly, the country is moving in a liberal direction. Give it a generation or two and we’ll be back on track to being conservative because that’s how our country’s political system works.

One last thing, Colbert is SATIRE. Meaning, IT IS A JOKE. Hence, FAKE NEWS. I would like to think this article is satire too. But I’ve com across far too many fools like you who take his show far more seriously than it needs to be. God, no wonder one of the rallying cries of young people in the 60s and 70s was “Trust no one over 30.”

Praise or Condemn: Thumb up 7 Thumb down 1

        • Catherine, it is not meant to be patronizing when I call people under 30 childish. Many of the comments here show how shallow-brained and immature they are. I think it’s a fair assessment of many of the lives of the Colbert fanatics. Their surreal obsession with a TV character are genuinely an indication of that. And I’m not the only one, many many people are calling 30 the new 20 (http://thedartmouth.com/2007/01/08/opinion/30 — from Dartmouth mag, Stephen’s Alma Mater) and your finances “The Bank of Mom and Dad” (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/20/fashion/thursdaystyles/20money.html)

And yes, once again (again and again!), I understand that COLBERT IS SATIRE. I am not a fool, you know. I have seen the show. My article clearing states this from the outset and if you would just calm your little self down and try to wrap that pretty little brain of yours through my article– even the big words, honey!– you might begin to understand my argument here. It’s how far we take Colbert beyond the satire, that I worry. He plants something much more in the fertile minds of the young– cynicism towards moral values, sarcasm towards anyone who embraces greater truths in our society, hatred toward the historical American values on which this country was founded.

And he does it by covertly pushing a radical democrat agenda, an agenda that he sneakily outlines but does not specifically defines so that fools like you who may support late term abortion or federal support for feminist studies or third world condom program believe that he supports them, too. You’re all liberals, so must be in the same boat, right? And yet, we don’t know exactly, specifically what this man believes because he never dares go out on a limb and say something from his heart, speak a truth. It words to his favor, he capitalizes on this ambiguity by cashing your checks and getting your eyeballs all over him.

And in this era of financial corruption, we should be worried about these types of democrats. Just today it was revealed that another Obama-connected democrat millionaire embezzled over $74 million.

As usual, though, you do not respond in any substantive way to the ideas that Colbert or any of the people writing comments bring up. Why not do that, if you are intelligent, as you say.

Start with this: Why did Republicans vote in support of a war which was clearly begun on false grounds? We know, really that the primary reason was you loving, peaceful Christians could not abide by the idea of people of the same sex marrying each other. That’s the bottom line. So, basically what you agree with is that white heterosexuals are God’s chosen people and in order to support that premise you will follow anyone wherever they say to go, whether it means killing or stealing or judging or anything. But you are Americans, and you will eat your fucking fried chicken and buy your big screen tvs to support your politicians killing anyone anywhere around the world as long as those same assholes go to a big mega church on Sunday before the football game and tell you that you are God’s chosen people and to prove it you have an election every four years to chose between Pepsi and Coke and elect another fucking corporate sycophant.

Why not look at why people across the globe hate you and dig a little deeper than coming up with reasons like “They hate our freedom?” Why not consider the fact that you fight wars to open trade for your corporations?

And lastly, will you answer me and for all where does the Bible say that capitalism is God’s way? That is the underlying premise behind all the shit you right wing lunatics push. Justify it, if you can.

The basic motive is that it preserves your position of privilege. But the US is rich not because of some moral superiority but because they stole land from Native Americans and used slave labor to profit from it. So, please, explain your moral high ground.

No because Jesus is perfect! you are No better than Stephen colbert, you sin everyday! So all you christians stop the judging. God is graciful too, he will judge but becareful too because not everyone who says Lord Lord will enter my kingdom, so stop the judgng and the hate because people are tired of it, and it turns them away from JEsus, read your bible and see how Jesus treated people. Oh and God is love.

            Thomas,

Clearly you misunderstand scripture, which is all to common to those that don’t learn their Bible from a priest or other authority.

Yes, Jesus said, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” But then, Jesus died to cleanse us of our sins, if we choose to accept him as our savior. I have chosen Jesus, and thus I am saved, and thus I can cast as many stones as I like, both figurative and literal. That’s logic. Only an atheist could see that as hypocritical.

If you are going to quote scripture, may I suggest that you not take quotes out of context? You will burn in hell and quite possibly get stoned in the meantime.

Praise or Condemn: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 3

    • No one will burn in hell because of Colbert. As for the 2nd sentence: You shall not murder! Quit being a hypocrit. Wake up! If you want to serve God, thats a good thing. But you can’t serve God with violence.

Its just another way for libs to avoid serviously the debate about politcas and health care. I bet they all will grow up too stoned to have a job or contribue to AMERICA!

Praise or Condemn: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 7

  • Also, I dont watch the show because my family isnt liberal limousine millonaires like the rest of those democrats with cable tv and caviar dinners. For the rest of AMERICA that nonsense is just to expensive and if I did have the money for cable I would spend it on college educating my SONS instead of watching all the porn they have on cable. and another thing i would definately forbid anyone in my family from watching this propaganda. No Colbert in my house thank you very very much!

Instead of getting advertiserrs to pull out of Glen Beck cant we get them to stop giving money to this tv show? Someone should start a letter writing campaign!!

Praise or Condemn: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 5

Praise or Condemn: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 4

    • So cable is the root of all evil? LOL, that’s rich. XD

Also, I’ve grown up on cable television and there’s nothing wrong as long as you *GASP* PARENT YOUR CHILDREN. Granted, this is coming from someone who watched Adult Swim’s action block at 14, so YMMV (though this was also in the days of Cowboy Bebop, Lupin III, Trigun, InuYasha and Case Closed, the last two I watched with my niece when she was 7-8, thank you very much).

Besides, the really graphic stuff is on Digital and/or Premium cable which is the cable you pay out of your nose to get (unless you work for the company, like my sister’s boyfriend, but that’s not the point). Even then, some of THAT graphic stuff is put behind a price tag, not to mention the tons of parental controls that one can use to prevent the kiddies from accessing what they’re too young for.

    • Why is Stephen not defending his country? Well, for one, he is deaf in one ear. Which, I’m sure you are thankful that God punished a ten year old for future sin. OTOH, he is a major supporter of our Troops, donating time and energy to the following organizations that support our men and women in arms and their families:
The Yellow Ribbon Fund, which aids the wounded and their families at Walter Read Hospital
DonorsChoose.org, in which individuals can donate to classes that have the children of members of the Five Branches of our military.
      The USO

Besides opening your mouth and letting your tongue speak evil, what have you personally done for our Troops?

With all the talking the liberal elite media does, they need to shut their mouths and service this country or just get out. All their rhetoric is just making the terrorists more emboldened and putting our boys in danger.

Praise or Condemn: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 5

    • OH WOW, that is rich. Apparently you missed the memo that Colbert JUST went to Iraq to show support for the troops ON TOP of what Josh told you? Not to mention he shaved his head for that same reason and has “IRAQ” shaved on his head as well. Really, I hate using internet memes to try to engage conversation, but STOP USING WORDS. You obviously know nothing about the man. Good god.

  • It seems like America’s Children have forgotten the Ten Commandents, particularly the part about: ‘You shall have no other gods before Me.’ Hear that you Colbert worshippers?

And God’s prediction that man’s creations will come to destroy bear some repeating here: “Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.” –Psalms 106:39

That’s exactly right! This TV whore has set his sights on eating America’s soul. And here are a few words on FALSE PROPHETS from the BIBLE which I think apply here:

“I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.” –Jer 23:14

“When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.” –Deu 18:22

And Colbert’s money motivation, the BIBLE talks about false prophets lust for wealth, too:

“Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money. Yet they lean upon the LORD and say, “Is not the LORD among us? No disaster will come upon us.” –Micah 3:11 [NIV]

Just thought I’d add God’s two cents!!!

Praise or Condemn: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 2

    • The fact that you people think you have the right to say what God would or wouldn’t think is absolutely absurd. The reason why Christianity is seen as a joke these days is because you have no sense of humor or understanding of people other than yourselves. People like you who think they have the right to condemn a simple comedian for God. Lunatics! Stop pretending you know what God would want; you’ve obviously lost sight of that decades ago by agreeing to join in a war that kills innocents and our own Americans.

You want to talk about not having any Gods before Him? How about not assuming yourself in a position to speak for God, LeAnn? Same with the “author” of this article; I’d rather bite my tongue instead of saying he’s a credible writer.

Also, saying “God wouldn’t like someone” or “Stoning should be legal” goes against one of the Commandments, does it not? Funny how you can justify your actions by becoming hypocrites.

    • Dear Sultan, I was going to write you a polite response but your snide “Sir” just stuck in my craw. You are not a military man nor an Englishman, so drop the affection. It doesn’t make you sound smart or sophisticated, just phony. On the whole, your comment is unsurprisingly symptomatic of the radical democrat who worships at the feet of Colbert, convinced the world revolves around their idol and his vacation time of all things! I could really care less when the man prances off to the Vineyard but it is sad that you are so obsessed with his life that you’re even aware of such things.

No matter, though. My article is not intended for Colbert, it’s for my fellow Christian-Americans. Your man couldn’t possibly answer my points anyway since that would require him to break character. You see, Stephen Colbert has discovered a position he believes unimpeachable by critics– shouting at everyone while not really standing for anything at all. Of course, all you wishful liberals believe he supports every one of your outrageous causes, and he likely does, but how can you tell EXACTLY what he stands for? He would never risk the money-making that his Right Wing fakery brings him just to support late term abortion, amnesty for illegals, lower ages of sexual consent or whatever things are so near and dear to you people. This gets back to the main point of my article, Stephen Colbert is in it for the money and that’s why he genuinely doesn’t contribute to the health of American society.

Well Sultan, welcome to Christwire! We do things on our own schedule here. God’s laws are timeless and sometimes faith means moving one small grain of sand at a time. I pray that my bits of sand may one day build a castle, something that is worthy of our Lord, but who can know such things? It is His wisdom that I have placed my trust in.

“Stephen Colbert represents one of the most dangerous trends in America next to Islamic terrorism today! And Colbert’s need for media attention and control over the young is insatiable.”

And with the enormous amount of money behind “Big Sodomy,” they’ll be stuffing gay marriage and gays in the military down our craw before Obama ends his first and only term.

Sadly, I do not believe many of the non-homosexual liberals understand the full implications of the gay lifestyle on America- the drugs, the sodomy, the early deaths. But have they really taken a very close look at the pedophilia, leather, pride parades, crossdressing, meth addiction, shrill protesting and all else that defines the gay lifestyle today? No, probably not.

“But have they really taken a very close look at the pedophilia, leather, pride parades, crossdressing, meth addiction, shrill protesting and all else that defines the gay lifestyle today? No, probably not.”

I know plenty of gay people, considering how I live in the very tolerant, accepting city of Cambridge, MA, and none of them are pedophiles, none of them wear leather (I’ve seen more straight women wearing leather than gay men), there is NOTHING wrong with pride parades (in fact, I’ve marched in several), I don’t know a single gay man who cross-dresses, I don’t know anybody, gay or straight, who does meth, and none of them are “shrill” protesters.

“Also, and this begs a larger question concerning the propriety of the attention he pays to young people, Colbert likes to drink beer and eats chips on his show. He has not yet been formally questioned or charged regarding this and it could be just another phase of his megalomania.”

Mr.Stephenson Billings, you really ought to be ashamed of yourself with this disgusting paragraph, which alludes to some dark sexual paedophile traits you believe may be lurking within Mr. Colbert. Do you not realise he is the proud, loving, doting father of 3 children????? He cares about their welfare so much that he does not allow them to watch his show because he does not want them to see their father playing this insincere character (NEWS FLASH!!! THE STEPHEN COLBERT ON THE COLBERT REPORT IS A CHARACTER, NOT HIM!!!!.

Mr. Billings, it doesn’t matter where Stephen Colbert stands on anything because at the end of the day, he’s a comedian (plain and simple). Your failture to realize this proves that you’re not in on the joke at all. Politics are used as material for the comedy, but laughter is the main goal. Regardless of what Stephen may want to promote; if he doesn’t get the laughs, then he’s failed. This undermines any political agenda you may believe he has. And it’s clear that you don’t know much about the show or Stephen himself. If you did then you would have realized that despite Stephen’s use of satire; he still gets criticized from both the Right and Left. And you call yourself an investigative journalist? But then again, all the hyperboles in your article seriously demean your journalistic claims.

Sure, Colbert is a comedian but most everybody understands that he is much more than that– a giant political force today. He marshals the troops against Republican and pro-marriage causes every week. He teaches our young people to be lazy and sarcastic, not to take anything seriously. And his success is emblematic of a larger trend of cynicism and hate in America that I find incredibly disturbing and offensive to God.

he’s a comedian, and if God hates him so much then he hasn’t done much to show it. Colbert’s been on the air for years and if god hated him then why hasn’t he killed him or blinked him out of existence?

      • I Smell Hypocrisy

It is quite a dilemma to decide what retarded and unfounded argument to dismantle and ridicule first. Hmm, let’s begin with the ones about the Roman Empire shall we?

-”Look what happened to Rome. The gays were allowed free reign and to make bath houses foul with their fecal sins. Needless to say Rome fell apart and was savaged by Godless barbarians.”

Let me see, firstly, Rome was not nearly as promiscuous and sexual as most think, that was in fact early Christian propaganda from the Dark Ages to dissuade from people researching Rome. Secondly Bathhouses were in fact places of both public interaction between classes as well as places of hygiene not seen anywhere else in Europe at that time, the reason the Bathhouses were dangerous was because of the lead pipes used to pump water, this was because lead did not rust and as such could be used for longer without replacing them. As for the “Godless barbarians” not only do most or indeed all individual groups of people have their own gods so no they weren’t “Godless” and in fact, some of the groups that attacked Rome, (Goths, Franks, Visigoths) were in fact Christians. Nice researching that one.

Secondly about the whole money thing.
“If we’re not a Christian nation why does our money say In God We Trust? Why are we one nation under God?”

Those phrases were added to the pledge of allegiance and the dollar bill during the Cold War to allow disparity between the West and the “Godless Communists” so the God part (notice how it doesn’t say WHICH God). The ‘God’ thing on the money and pledge has nothing to do with Christianity and was more for purposes of propaganda.

Let’s continue onto gays shall we? Yes, let’s.
“Well Dan, who in the liberal media doesn’t support the gay agenda when it comes right down to it? Truth is most of them do support it, or they’re actually homosexuals themselves but never get around to disclosing this obvious conflict of interest when reporting homosexual lifestyle issues. But have they really taken a very close look at the pedophilia, leather, pride parades, crossdressing, meth addiction, shrill protesting and all else that defines the gay lifestyle today? No, probably not.”

I can’t help it, this actually made me laugh. Simply from the ridiculousness of the entire argument, not only are you essentially using elementary school methods of calling everyone who doesn’t agree with you (the Liberal Media in this case) as gay, something that most people seem to stop doing around middle or high school. Secondly how exactly do gays increase “Drugs, Pedophilia, Early Deaths, Crossdressing, Meth, and shrill protesting”? Not only is it in fact the opposite in many cases (There are far more shrill protesters against gays than for gays) Crystal Meth has nothing to do with gays, and instead with people who either sell or use the drugs themselves, many of which are not gay people, ‘Drugs’ makes no sense since you do not specify which drugs hence the argument holds no weight due to it’s completely unspecific nature (are we talking cocaine or allergy medicine here as ‘Drugs’?) Crossdressing makes no sense since there are many straight people as well as gays who crossdress, it’s not necessarily a sexual choice, simply a fashion choice, and for the Early Deaths thing, well, I assume you mean AIDS/HIV, which is not only spread probably more through the heterosexual pool than the homosexual pool simply BECAUSE people think only gays have AIDS hence they do not adequately protect themselves.

Now onto politics, my last argument for this post.
“Yes, our country is falling away from its conservative roots.

Our nation is falling apart because we have fallen away from the body of Christ.”

I’m going to say first, exactly what kind of “Conservative Roots” are you talking about? After all, the idea of healthcare for all is not a “conservative” idea, but that of liberals. The economy is in shambles not because of anything the “Non Conservatives” have done, in fact this is far from the truth, Ronald Reagan, the much celebrated conservative, increased national debt more than any other President in history, Bill Clinton is the only president for the past four Presidents to lessen our nation’s debt, George Bush Sr. and George W. Bush both tremendously increased our nation’s debt and increased government control over individual lives by leaps and bounds (something that “Conservatives” are wholeheartedly against, liberals are supposed to be for “big government” not Conservatives). Teenage pregnancy has always been a fact of life, from earliest times, people have been getting pregnant as teens, in earlier times it was because you would rarely live past 30 years of age, now people find problems with it due to the disruption it causes on society’s morals, and for no other reason. The body of Christ has little to do with any of these factors and in fact, it should not matter at all into the issue of violence in Public Schools, since our government and constitution has a nice little clause, that of “separation of Church and State.”

As a little bonus, I simply say this, Mr. Billings, stop referring to people as “My Child”. Not only is it condescending towards the people who hold legitimate criticisms for this article, but it labels you as a hypocrite since you refer to other people as “My Child” when you do not like the title of “Sir” which is given as a title of respect and acknowledgment of superiority, or at least equality, unlike your chosen title for others which brands them as children as opposed to talking to people like equals, so in short, stop being a hypocrite and get your facts right people. Thank you for your time, and I hope you continue to live in whatever lifestyle you choose, after all, Jesus himself said to “turn the other cheek.”

        • Its so sad you have that education and still no ethics. I dont know where to beging with your big “essay” hypocrite, but it’s all baloney. Heres a good article about the gays and our society (written by Stephenson, too!) you have to read- http://christwire.org/2009/05/protecting-yourself-from-“big-sodomy”/ . Crystal Meth is completely well known as a gay party drug so I buy dont your horsecrap for a second.

This is also a Christian country. That has been the most important religion here for since the country was discovered and founded. Remember the Pilgrims? And the founding fathers had faith and incredible devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ. Go: http://www.faithofourfathers.net/

But the moral foundation and greatness of this country has been attacked again and again by the instigators who want to turn free speech into an excuse for sexual frenzy. The liberals have done so much to hurt this country, make us weak in the eyes of our enemies. From Bill Clinton to now Obama, the democrats are full of corruption, sex scandals, Hollywood connections, and attakcs on the beauty of marriage. It defys the mind to think of all the things in this country they want to destroy and why they dont just pack up and leave. Like Alex Baldwin! Come on, I’ll pack your bags for you! Wow, you know a lot about the depravity of Rome! Congratulations you pervert. And yes, homosexuality is not accepted in the Bible. The Bible spefically address why this is such an incredibly dangerous lifestyle. How do you expect Christians today to just accept it and say it’s morally okay? We have a responsibility to suppress and fight it.

        • We need only look at the Bible for the qualities we need in our leaders:

(God said…) “He who rules over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God. And he shall be like the light of the morning when the sun rises, a morning without clouds, like the tender grass springing out of the earth, by clear shining after rain.” –2 Sam 23.3b-4

“Select capable men from all the people–men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain–and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.” –Exod 18.21, NIV

“Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.” –Ps 2.10-11

Can you genuinely say Stephen Colbert embodies any of this with his deceptions and lies and profanities and trickeries? How is it that he has fooled you into following him when he is just a shadow, not a real man but a projection against a cave wall?

          • I suppose you could use the bible to justify your insane and illogical views. Personally I find using the scripture from “How To Cook on Minimum Wage” cookbook to contain a much better message when trying to justify bigoted and homophobic views.

“And thee Great Cook in the sky parted the clouds and declared ‘Use More Pepper’, and it was done” (Which quite clearly means “No gays in the pool between 5-6pm”)

          • Mr. Stephen Billings,

Opinion is always filled with flaws, of which your whole article is based on.

You repeatedly hide behind the bible and its’ words, twisting everything you read from the bible to support your opinions. I could write an article about Stephen Colbert and quote sections of the bible to SUPPORT him. You are no better than Hannity or Olbermann, twisting any written words to support your opinion, religious or otherwise. This is the biggest problem with religion. Every religion has people who feel it is their RIGHT to interpret their religion to their viewpoint! Religion (anyone’s) has been and always will be the flash point for conflicts and wars, based on people with similar viewpoints as your own guiding their way. You sir, along with many others devoted to the utopian assumations of Christianity, are the reason this country, among others, will eventually scorn religion, not support it. You would think it would scare the crap out of you to realize that the word “atheist” isn’t so harsh a term anymore. You sir are one of many that are contributing to this revolt against religion. People don’t want to be told how to think or live by others, especially when it is quoted from the bible and followed with “see God told ya so”.

You also put Jane Fonda as the first picture making it seem as if he’s “in-bed” with an “Anti” American. Gimme a break. Your neo-conservatism shines to the forefront with this statement and the automatic reference to Adolf Hitler and Stalin that you guys love to conjure up. Any time you disagree with someone and then slapping up a picture or referencing the name of two of the most destructive humans ever to walk this earth and politely say “he/she is just like them” should be criminal in and of itself. That’s not journalism that’s our-right fabrication. Not to mention the fact that you threw more homophobia into your one article than Colbert has done the last few years on television. I’ll take a not so wild shot in the dark here that you are a “birther” too.

Something tells me they should be teaching more/better ethics classes with journalism now-a-days, at least if that’s who this article is supposed to be from, which is very much in-doubt. Neo-conservative blogging seems to be your career path.

    4. COLBERT IS JOKING! The whole being big on himself is a joke! He uses sarcasm to point out inaccuracies in political positions. No one worships him. They watch his show.
    5. Just for fun: Hannity, Limbaugh, Newt, etc. are idiots! They have no idea what they’re talking about!

        • WTFISWRONGWITHYOU ,

          1) Colbert is more than a stand up comic, he’s now, for better or worse, a political force (due mostly to the very fans who have shown up here).

          2) Terrorism is a great threat to the very core beliefs we Americans hold dare, but so is the cynicism, hate, defeat and lies that Colbert’s people represent. Lord Chamberlin, fearful of standing up to a fearsome national enemy, acquiesced and thereby prolonged WWII years, bringing death to millions of Jews. George Bush Sr was held back by Congress from pursuing Saddam all the way back to Baghdad and this resulted in a rogue state that was a grave threat to us in the age of terror, making it necessary for GWB to return (and he faced the same problem- had we bombed more and sent twice as many troops, this thing would have been long ago concluded).

There are many other examples where such dithering and apologizing have held back the forces of good. The French thought the Maginot line would save them, but the Germans just walked around it. The French, so debauched in political and moral corruption were unprepared and had to suffer through the war as an occupied territory. Do you want that to happen here? I don’t, and that’s why I advocate for strong beliefs and a strong America. I advocate for those things to protect people like you, to protect YOUR freedoms even if you don’t understand or care the sacrifice we make for you.

Editorial: UGA should declare Colbert ineligible for Peabody Award
Athens Banner-Herald | Story updated at 9:02 pm on 8/13/2009

“Perhaps, Bulldog Nation, you have heard of Stephen Colbert, the comedic “genius” who for the past few years has been eking out a living on cable TV’s Comedy Central with the half-hour weekday “Colbert Report,” in which he attempts to portray an ersatz right-wing political pundit.

“Improbably, Colbert’s middling effort at humor – the “Report” is admittedly funnier, more poignant, and more attuned to the vagaries of the human condition than “The Golden Girls,” but not quite to the level of, say, “The Facts of Life” – earned him a 2007 Peabody Award, widely recognized as the most prestigious honor in electronic media.

“Sadly, Colbert’s treatment of the award went quickly from funny to, well … erratic. Shortly after winning the award, Colbert used a segment of the “Report” to suggest the Peabody “could be shinier,” and to weirdly link his recognition to the role of Doritos snack chips in his ersatz presidential campaign. “Doritos have now won a Peabody,” Colbert giddily intoned. He then placed a homemade “Peabody Award Winning” sticker on a bag of Doritos, and urged viewers to do the same, pronouncing the snack chips “crunchtigious.” Shortly after that, the “Report” featured Colbert presenting George Foster Peabody with the “Golden Dorito,” symbol of the “Stephen T. Colbert Award for Excellence in Recognizing Excellence.”

“Colbert’s sad slide into comedic irrelevance regarding the Peabody Award reached its anticipated nadir earlier this week. During a “Report” segment on the slimly tangential story of a Connecticut woman who gave herself a fake nursing award from a fictitious nursing association, Colbert pulled the Peabody from under his desk and said, “Anybody can make up an award or a fancy association. That’s how I got my Peabody.” He then smirkily intoned, “The University of Georgia? Ridiculous. There are no universities in Georgia. It’s (the award) chocolate.”

They’re just offended because Colbert disparaged the Georgia educational system. Overall, organizations like these love to puff up their fellow travelers, giving each other awards, catered dinners and 60 Minutes profiles, etc. etc. If not the Peabodys, some other group will surely line up to give him a shiny statue just because he controls tv airtime.

Not only is it completely unchristlike, it;s also completely untrue. You have no factual basis for saying these awful things. “Caesar Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus Augustus[3] (27 February c. 272[2] – 22 May 337), commonly known in English as Constantine I, Constantine the Great, or (among Eastern Orthodox, Coptic Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic Christians) Saint Constantine (pronounced /ˈkɒnstɛntaɪn/), was Roman emperor from 306, and the undisputed holder of that office from 324 until his death in 337. Best known for being the first Christian Roman emperor, Constantine reversed the persecutions of his predecessor, Diocletian, and issued (with his co-emperor Licinius) the Edict of Milan in 313, which proclaimed religious toleration throughout the empire.” in other words, widespread acceptance of Christianity in the Empire came about 300 years after Christ’s death.

Fact is that our entire civilization, including our form of government, architecture of our capital buildings, and even modern theater comes from the Greeks and Romans.

      • Not really….no The fall of Rome was due to the lack of pureblooded soldiers which were caused by:
The Empire’s massive domain, which began taking in not only the valuable wares of each sector, but also the diseases.
The brutal civil wars between the pagan emperors. In one 50 year period 25 emperors reigned. One died of natural causes. This discouraged the citizenry from enlisting as soldiers.
The lackof pureblood soldiers caused the Empire to hire barbarian troops for protection, most of whom had no loyalty to the crown at all. The fall of Rome at 476 was not due to an invasion, but due to an Ostrogothic coup within the military itself.
The Church, which was supposed to unite the empire at this time of need, was suffering through a civil war of its own, and was thus unable to provide support.

Yep, it is “quite possibly” another joke! For those of us who are in on the joke, there’s nothing “quite possible” about it—it is a joke, and for recovering Catholics like myself, it’s pretty funny. I have a tough time believing that you are “in on the joke” when you seem less than sure about what, exactly, that joke is.

And “a lustful need to surround himself with children”? That’s hilarious, honestly—nice use of hyperbole. Of course, you were just talking about college-age students, so the term “children” is deliberately misleading, but if you were aiming for the satirical brass ring, good effort!

    • I know many of you have brought up this idea that I somehow don’t “get” Stephen Colbert’s comedy, that’s I somehow believe his Republican character is the true Stephen. That’s completely wrong and only shows your very poor reading skills. My article specifically states that Stephen is not the Republican blowhard he presents himself as, but something more sinister. He is a Trojan Horse, rolled into your Sodoms with the shiny armor of Liberalism and Obama, but the truth is something is lurking inside that flimsy structure.

The man, at his heart, an actor, a comedian, someone who craves the spotlight and attention and the MONEY. He is using you people and is completely unwilling to step out and make a commitment to real issues affecting this country. He hides behind the fake grimace of his. I’m surprised anyone trusts this man at all. He’s obviously a charlatan with no real blood pumping through his heart. His cynicism and sarcasm is a menace and from the democrat and daily kos-style replies here, I can see the negative effects of his work.

  • I’ll set aside the bad writing, which is really quite bad. You may want to look into Strunk’s The Elements of Style. You need it. But to the point. You really don’t get it, do you? It’s not an act. When you say things like “[Colbert] mocks Black [sic] people saying don’t care about race” (another horrendous sentence that incorrectly joins subject to predicate), you fail to understand that he is making fun of you. He’s impersonating people like you to illustrate how insane are the “values” you purport to hold. He’s talking about white conservative “leaders” who pretend to be inclusive and embrace diversity while their actions make it obvious to everyone that nothing could be further from the truth.

Colbert raises tons of money for the families of veterans and active service members. What do you do but pontificate with laughable prose and ludicrous hyperbole such nonsense as “Stephen Colbert represents one of the most dangerous trends in America next to Islamic terrorism today!” Get a life. Get a real job. And for the sake of us all, learn to write or put your pen down for good.

The part about black people is, in fact, a slight typo. The quotation marks all through this article were deleted in the processing of uploading and the full line should have read, “Colbert mocks black people saying, “I don’t care about race.” I hope it makes it a tiny bit clearer for you there. I know this is one of Colbert’s cute little jokes, but it find it hollow and capricious. What does he contribute to discussions about race with such drivel?

As for the charity, Colbert doesn’t raise tons of money, he gets you loyal fans to buy a set of pencils for some Ozark school now and again but I wouldn’t exactly say he’s a philanthropist. And you’re easy prey for it. He commands and you start clicking away with your Mastercard numbers. I am truly moved by the service of our troops fighting the good fight against global terror, but I believe questioning and mocking every aspect of the war is unbecoming and counterproductive. We could have finished up things in Iraq much sooner had we not been held back by the Dems in Congress. It is nice that he does things for the troops families, but I don’t find his motivations sincere. He strikes me as another guy who drapes himself in Americana when it suits him and helps his bottom line.

  • Mr. Billings,

You ‘sir’ are one of the things wrong with communication in this world. Hyperbolic arguments and a deliberate ignorance of any fact that doesn’t fit with your desired view does not make you right. You call yourself an investigative journalist and yet you’ve stated repeatedly in your replies here that you have only partially studied ‘facts’ you were complaining about. If you want to be taken seriously, maybe you should actually do what you claim to do.

I am former military, having served in wartime in a combat arms capacity. I helped guarantee your right to say what you want and for Stephen Colbert to say his piece as well. As Americans you are both equals as we all are. You may not like what he says but for the love of God be honest in your arguments. Hyperbole is another form of false witness. If you can’t win an argument with the pure truth should you even make the argument?

It is unAmerican to NOT challenge the establishment when they are corrupt and subject to manipulation by anyone other than the people. I challenged the wrongful invasion of Iraq. It hurt the war on terror more than anything else as it bled critical resources that could have been used to crush Al-queida in their safe haven of Afghanistan. Bush/Cheney was a horrible administration, they stripped more rights from the american people than anyone could have imagined and conservatives stayed silent yet this administration wants healthcare available for all of the the american people and you compare him to Hitler! What kind of F’d up logic system do right wing nutjobs have?

Extreme views in any environment are not a good thing. For a little insight, the muslim right wing is where Al’Qeida resides, I equate our American extreme right as equals to Bin Ladens boys. Liberalism is about as bad, you end up with anarchy when you slide too far left. This world needs more moderate voices that try to actually understand one another and work to meet in the middle for the good of ALL.

I have a few questions for you if you dare respond coherently and without hyperbole:

What is the threat of gay marriage to the ‘sanctity’ of marriage? If marriage was that sanctimonious there would be no ability to divorce.

What is the threat of open homosexuals serving in the military? I served with gays who kept it as an open secret. We all knew and didn’t mind. Insert 1 right winger with a closet gay issue and they made all kinds of hell, including false statements, to get a perfectly good soldier kicked out. Good job for weakening our fighting force in a time of war.

Why your obsession with Colbert? It’s obviously satire and he makes fun of anyone who strays across his radar, liberal or conservative. He’s supported the troops more than any other celebrity I’ve seen. He’s visited the troops, Shaved his head for comeraderie with them and he has his foundation for their families. What have you done for our troops? I’d be willing to bet you may have a yellow ribbon magnet on your car at the most.

From your ‘article’ it becomes obvious that you aren’t really bright enough to grasp the level of Steven Colbert’s humor. While most is overt he has many layers of subtlety built in. There’s a reason he gets awards for his work. If you had actually researched the man you would have found that he considers the television persona a character and nothing more. He keeps his work and real life as 2 seperate entities. But I guess if it’s on TV show it has to be fact, am I right?

Before you go on another hyperbolic rant about someone else, please review the bible you claim to know and make sure you aren’t presenting your opinions as fact (false witness), It might also be a good idea to actually research your subject matter instead of stopping when you’ve reached your shallow comfort level.

In any event, let me state this once again:

Colbert is disingenuous through and through. It’s a pathetic statement on American society today that a man known for that singular quality is the beacon of our youth. Does this mean America loves the tearing down beliefs more than embracing the time-honored truths? When you young people are done tearing down all the moral foundations of this society, what will you build up with? You will have nothing. You’ll see then that the Colberts and Stewarts and Howard Deans have left you empty handed. They contribute nothing on which to grow America. They offer no ideas or symbols for our future. One of the incredible advantages of giving you life to Christ is that you don’t hide from the truth. There is no need. It fits all the evidence, from science, from the nature of human beings, from their capacity for good and evil, from the remarkable life of our savoir, Jesus Christ and his teaching which has touched millions upon millions of people through history.

What we have been discussing here is not your type of “truth”, so bound to earthly needs and superstitions. It is not your lustful beliefs and your idol-worship of this man Colbert. What about hospital wait times and can we really afford with Obama’s ecomony to support this care for non-American illegal aliens who just wander into a hospital too? You are the crazy one who’s stupidty will bankrupt the US of A.

Praise or Condemn: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

          • Since no one answered your, most likely rhetorical, questions in the past month, I will answer them.

“Why are Canadians coming to America if there govt free health is so great?”

There is a very simple answer to this: They don’t. I live a few hundred miles away from the Canadian border, and I know several U.S. citizens that drive there for health care.

“can we really afford with Obama’s ecomony to support this care for non-American illegal aliens who just wander into a hospital too?

“Obama’s economy” is already supporting their care. Hospitals are currently required to treat any one who has a medical emergency regardless of their citizenship or ability to pay. Now you can be upset about that if you want, personally I’d rather not wait for them to do a credit check before they sew my arm back on, but it has nothing to do with any proposed health care reform.

            “What about hospital wait times”?

I can only assume that this myth is base in the fact that some places that have nationalized health care tend have a longer waiting period. The longer wait is do to the disproportionate number of people who need health care compared to amount of health that is actually available. It has nothing to do with how that health care is paid for.

I have never heard of an article in the constitution that that prohibits nationalized health care, but if you let me know which one it is I can look it up for future reference.

You are absolutely right in saying that nationalized health care will ruin the free enterprise of the health insurance industry. I’m just not sure why you think that’s a bad thing. The United States is the only industrialized nation without nationalized health care.

But really the health care debate boils down to one simple question: Do I want to help my fellow man, or tell them “suck it up, you should have gotten a better job”?

    • There’s no denying that Falwell was human, after all, with all that that entails. But so was Bill Clinton. And Obama and Colbert will not by on that shiny pedestal forever if history is any judge. President George Washington’s statement is just one of many from a voluminous record. Thankfully, they corresponded and wrote diaries a great deal back then. It’s easy enough to find a thousand counter arguments made by the founding fathers, places where they stated emphatically the Christian foundation of this incredible country that we share.

Praise or Condemn: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

      • You’ve mentioned idol worship frequently, as though “the youth” are devoting the same level of blind faith to Colbert’s word that you do to the bible (imperfect though it may be, having been written and translated by human hands). I assure you this is not the case; although it’s extremely likely that many more people use the Colbert Report/Daily Show for their main source of news than should be doing so, but the vast majority of the audiences of both shows has had some training in critical thinking. The idea that his word is taken as gold is ludicrous; he’s a comedian, people know he’s a comedian, and so they take the things he says for what they are- jokes.

As for the Founding Fathers, I’d love to see the evidence of which you spoke- indicating they thought America should be a Christian nation. I highly doubt this to be the case, but if you can produce the quotations from a reliable source, I will reconsider.

        And lastly:

‘One of the incredible advantages of giving you life to Christ is that you don’t hide from the truth. There is no need. It fits all the evidence, from science, from the nature of human beings, from their capacity for good and evil, from the remarkable life of our savoir, Jesus Christ and his teaching which has touched millions upon millions of people through history.’

The first sentence I can understand. The third, for all my rereadings, is still not a sentence. If you’d professed to be anything but a journalist, I’d excuse that, but the combination of the two, along with the fact that the whole paragraph evades the original comment, makes me believe that you (and possibly JaniceFun) are in fact trolling.

“Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.” (Hebrews 13:4)

“But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars– their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8)

  • I can only conclude that Stephenson Billings is paying tribute to Colbert by demonstrating Poe’s Law.

In his first paragraph Billings gives us a clue that this article is a Poe: “…anarchist democrat worldview coherently enough for most common Americans to get a taste of how wrongheaded these proto-socialists of the left can be.”

In less than one sentence he accuses those who don’t drink the wing nut right’s Kool-Aid of being both anarchist and socialist. One can be an anarchist or one can be a socialist, but not both since they are polar opposite philosophies.

In this article and in his comment replies Billings implies that he is intelligent and that people should listen to him. Since I am certain that Billings’s assessment of his own intelligence could not be wrong, he certainly could not be accusing the left of both anarchism and socialism by mistake, hence this whole article must be a Poe.

For those of you who are too lazy to Google: Poe’s Law makes the clear point that it is hard to tell parodies of fundamentalism from the real thing, since they both seem equally insane. In other words, No matter how bizzare, outrageous, or just plain idiotic a parody of a Fundamentalist may seem, there will always be someone who cannot tell that it is a parody, having seen similar REAL ideas from real religious/political Fundamentalists.

But anyway, on to my point. Colbert is hilarious. He is a comedian, and a fairly good one at that. Yes, he does comedy that is similiar to other Comedians, because he does it in the same style. Would that not mean that all Poets are ripoff artists, because they follow the same artstyle as another? You cannot look at things in such a black or white fashion, beacuse subjects like this are rarely black or white. If you do not like the man, don’t watch him. Talk among your friends and family about why you don’t like him, which is basically what you are doing on this site, which is fair enough. Sadly, your post is simply slander. There is no room in your mind for other thoughts, thoughts that are different from your own. Journalists are supposed to be unbiased, but you may be the most biased person I’ve ever seen. I’ve been watching for years and sometimes wondered why his words didn’t seem to match his actions, and now I get it–he is an evil trojan, a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and we should all be careful lest we fall into his trap.

Those who worship at the altar of Colbert will burn in hell, and I say, good riddance! Good riddance to the homogays and the atheists and the Anarchists, because we, we the good Christians, we know the truth–and the truth is, we are granted life, and Colbert is granted eternal fire, and THAT is the end of it! False prophet, I condemn thee.

There is just one thing that’s been niggling at me, and I’m hoping a man with so much insight such as yourself can help me. If Jesus preached love, love to all, and was by the standards of the time the equivalent of a hippy, how is it that the rhetoric spewed by so many Christians is just the opposite of his teachings? This is a serious question, and I’d like to know your answer.

“Kids love clowns and balloons and squeezing a horn nose.”

Kids don’t love clowns. This is just a guess, but I’d say that at least 60% of children, teenagers, and adults have a clown phobia. When I saw the 1990 miniseries of Stephen King’s “It”, I was scarred for life. From age 11 to age 17, I slept with my light on. No, not a little nightlight – the bright top light. I’ve improved greatly, although I still gasp and shudder for several minutes if I see a picture of a clown and I was not expecting to. I find all clowns frightening, but it’s the ones with fluffy red hair and complete face makeup that horrify me.

Praise or Condemn: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

        • I also was scarred, though LONG before I ever saw/read “It” (or even knew who Stephen King was, for that matter…) When I was born, one of my mother’s friends made me a blanket with a giant clown face on the front, and a couple dozen other clowns doing mischievous clown things in comic-strip-style square panels on the back of the blanket. My mother draped this monstrosity over the rocking chair that was next to my crib, so I fell asleep every night with this giant, glowing, clown face grinning at me through the bars of my crib. Naturally, Stephen King and John Wayne Billings-I-Mean-Gacey didn’t help any once I found out about them.

      Blessed are those who mourn,
      for they will be comforted.
      Blessed are the meek,

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
      for they will be filled.
      Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
      for they will see God.
      Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

  • Craig (not Aussie),

I agree that Jon Stewart and Colbert work well together. They should, they essentially read from the same playbook. But Stewart doesn’t draw the fanaticism of Colbert, nor do I find his reporting as very biased. It is pretty standard in its anti-Christian Democrat positions, but Stewart is less a buffoon than Colbert. His scrunched shoulder, “ham it up” routine has definitely grown tired. Also, he doesn’t have the mental stamina of Colbert, but I also don’t think he’s not as sinister. Stewart is the quintessential liberal New York Jew with a dash of pop culture on his lapel. His comedy is like something you would see in those 1950s Berkshire summer hotels (wherever it was the Jewish people went then). I expect an audience full of blue-haired ladies chainsmoking. He mediocre in the middle essence does help him draw higher profile guests, but other than making a few requisite off-color jokes, he rarely gets them to say anything interesting, let alone newsworthy.

As for you very personal statements about my character, I will leave them out there for you to reconsider but I would ask you reread my article and try to comprehend my main points. They are directly at people precisely like you.

Doubtful at best, impossible at worst. So no, probably not. And to you Mr. Billings, I will stoop to your level and say this, your ‘morals’ and ‘values’ that you seem to spout at every occasion like some sort of dogmatic leaky pipe are the same ‘morals’ and ‘values’ that were against such things as Rock&Roll, the Civil Rights Movement and for such things as McArthy’s Trials, simply because you cannot see a different opinion than your own, and cannot believe that people have other values besides those which seem to lack anything in the way of either common sense, or more importantly on the topic of Stephen Colbert, a sense of humor. It is this idea that America must be forced to obey some deranged sense of morals such as your own that have caused such great persecution in our society over the years. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was 30 years ago that you’d be righting an article similar to this on the devils of Led Zeppelin, the Who, and Rock&Roll as some sort of breakdown of civilized society. It seems there are people like that in every generation and on every topic, I’m just glad in this case that the majority sees past your nonsense.

Don’t flatter yourself into thinking you’re that sharp. And I am totally in support of the Civil Rights movement. There were plenty of Christians who were.

As for Rock & Roll- there is some great Christian rock out there and early rock had close ties to Country & Western music which often shows deep religious faith. Though Lead Zepplin and the other bands you mentioned encouraged a generation to take drugs and engage in risky sex. Many, many lives were hurt by their example,

And while I don’t agree with Senator Joseph Mccarthy’s trials, I do understand why we had them. You young people forget the incredibly dangerous situation America was during the cold war, when nuclear bombs could have dropped at any moment, Castro and Che were supporting terrorism across the world and the battle against communist dictatorship was being fought from Vietnam to Peru to Indonesia, Afghanistan and even at home. It was a great challenge for this country and from time to time a little house cleaning was necessary.

It was also the Southern Democrats who mostly stood against the Civil Rights movement.

    I especially like these lines:

“like an Al Qaeda training camp, indoctrinating fragile minds into a fanatical hatred of American values and arming them with the doublespeak, laziness and opportunism to destroy this country’s economic and moral foundation”
    “pot-smoking former Lesbian prostitute”
    “pundit-perennially-never-ready-for-primetime Jon Stewart”

  • Careful mate, we’re almost having a real conversation… Shouldn’t we be yelling?

    Cheers.

p.s. Don’t hate Australia for its beauty, and I won’t lump every American political mis-adventure together… hell I even agree with some of them.

  • I whole heartily agree with this article, I for one have dedicated my life to following the word of God, his holy son, and the teachings of their disciples.

However, I have run into some hiccups and am confused at what i should do:

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as it suggests in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

My wife is currently locked in the basement due to this being her menstrual period, however, getting ordinary women to admit those times of the month have proven difficult to me. Any suggestions? Lev. 15:19-24

I have two brothers who pre-deceased their wives. One of these women was childless. I understand that it was my duty as the husband’s brother (Deut. 25:5-10), to go in unto this childless sister-in-law, and bed her, and take her as my wife and bring up an heir for my poor dead brother. Did it matter that I was already married? Did it matter that my wife took a dim view of my actually doing this? Was letting my sister-in-law publicly spit in my face the only alternative I had to doing this? That was pretty damn humiliating, I can tell you!

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

Finally i have repeatedly thrown stones at my disobedient son, however, due to weakness on my part i am unable to kill him. What should I do?

Janice you seem like a person that I can go to with these problems. The dedication that you’ve shown to the lord in these comments have inspired me to ask for your help

I have found things you speak post article to be far more in line with Hitler and Stalin (2 murderers you neo-cons’/FOX brainwashed cons’ love to invoke) than ANYTHING Colbert has ever done. You obviously have your own “final solution” you would love to impose on this country. Scary thing is chances are you would be murdering far more than Hitler or Stalin ever did combined.

    Your list:

    Illegal immigrants
    Jews
    Liberals
    Satirical Comedians
    Non-believers

    Maybe not in that order.

Typical religious fanaticism. How are you better than other right-wing religious groups/people? In the right setting (1930′s-40′s Germany perhaps) you would murder to further your own religious beliefs in just the same way that other fanatics have done in decades/centuries past.

You are part of the problem not part of the solution.

  • I have never seen Stephen Colbert, but reading this page has been just as comic as any of his shows could be. Though this article has been written as an attack against Colbert, it seems to have the contrary affect and has only shown how the ego and fear driven republican people of the US attack anything that that threatens what they stand for, the land of the free who are so threatened by freedom of speech and freedom of way of life. Not openly supporting war is not a bad thing, it might be hard for many of you people to understand but war does make anything better, and the sooner the US war machine that has been plaguing the world like locusts for the past sixty years gets that into there heads the better. Stephenson Billings is a disgrace, I mean “Jesus juice”, he is clearly a twisted fearful man, and I can’t help but love the George W – “sophisticated and kind” hahaha, that has made my week! The article was so extreme and far fetched I was questioning at many points if it was itself making fun of republicans, I can’t help but feel you guys need to learn some philosophy or psychology that can help you let go of your egos and fears and gain some compassion and faith, for your own benefit and the rest of the worlds.

Praise or Condemn: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    • Jock T, you’re obviously foreign and somewhat of a fool. “Jesus Juice” is the term that noted pedophile Michael Jackson coined for his soda cans of wine he fed to children before molesting them. It is not something to laugh about, but instead it’s a terribly sad symbol of how left-wing celebrities can do whatever their debauched hearts desire as long as they have fame and money.

And yes we Republicans are motivated– I wouldn’t use the word “afraid”– but we are motivated to rise up against the immorality and depravity we see in this world. We have an obligation to vote and act on our beliefs. How else should we act?

Finally, this world but be a lot worse off had it not been for the US “war machine” as you label it. Hitler would have won Europe, the Japanese Asia and Stalin everywhere in between. The US singlehandedly stood up against these three major forces of evil. You are welcome.

  • The sheer volume of ignorance in this thread is astounding.

Adam Nelson: The Civil War was the last time the Republican party held the high ground. At the time it was also the liberal party – abolition was a radical left-wing value, whereas traditional Christian preachers were cherry-picking their Bibles for sections that supported slavery (Noah’s son Ham being the most egregious example in my mind). The names may be the same but the racist, hateful Republican party of today bears no relation to the Republicans of Lincoln’s time. Especially since the Republicans were in favor of A STRONG FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. Yep, that sure is what Republicans advocate these days!

Oh, and by the way Adam: you figure God hates Stephen Colbert? What are you basing that on, exactly? His rampant success? His ability to make millions of people happy? Or is it just that you assume God agrees with your narrow, bigoted worldview? Oh, now don’t worry your little head about that: I know there’s no God anyway!

To the rest of this thread: You have lost. Conservatives have always been on the wrong side of history. It’s taken us a long time, but those of us who are radicals and liberals have brought about the end of slavery, suffrage for women, rights for minorities and gays, and a host of other positive social changes. And no matter how angry you get, no matter how many stupid blog posts you make, no matter how many moronic signs you wave around in some ill-conceived protest of nebulous concepts… you have already failed. The future welcomes the rest of us with open arms, whereas your views will go the way of phrenology and the Greek Pantheon. I pity you – I really do – because I imagine it must feel very upsetting. But the sooner you abandon your primitive dogmas the happier you’ll be.

And I want to preface this by pointing out that I have voted Republican every time I’ve voted. But your post does nothing to help the problem that does exist. You are relying on bad information, the concept that American children must all be parentless, and an over-the-top homophopic and bigoted attitude. You don’t put together a winning argument by insulting the readers. This only angers and annoys people and no sensible person should expect a productive result.

  • Leon Bloomgren

To Stephanson Billings in response to his CNN post regarding Rudolph Guiliani’s statement in January 2010 that “”We had no domestic attacks under Bush; we’ve had one under Obama.”

    Sir,

You wrote: “Technically, he [Guiliani] is correct. 9/11 was an act of war by a rogue nation (Afghanistan) and President George Bush and his team worked tirelessly after that to prevent any further acts from happening. On the other hand, Bill Clinton had the two embassies in Africa destroyed, the Cole destroyer burned, etc. etc. And Mr. Obama, too, has been asleep at the wheel, more concerned with giving health care to people who dont want to work rather than protecting this country which I think is actually in his job description. Shame!”

    Where to begin?

    1. There was not even one Afghani citizen involved in the 9/11 attacks. Of the 19, 15 were from Saudi Arabia, 2 were from Saudi Arabi, 1 was from Lebanon, and 1 (Mohamed Atta, the ringleader of “The Berlin Cell”) was from Eygpt. Only 8 members had ever set foot in Afghanistan.

    2. Guiliani says that there were no terrorist attacks on the US under Bush; you say that this is “technically” correct, that Bush worked “tirelessly” on preventing attacks and that Obama is “asleep at the wheel.”

These were attacks that began on American soil under the watch of the FAA, CIA, FBA and Homeland Security, all reporting to Bush. As the 9/11 commission states, the Bush administration “did not heed the numerous sources of credible intelligence by either domestic counter-terrorist agencies or international partners” (9/11 Commission Report Executive Summary, p 13). As George Tenant, CIA Director, said at the commission “During the spring and summer of 2001, U.S. intelligence agencies received a stream of warnings about an attack al Qaeda planned, as one report puts it “something very, very, very big”…. “the system was blinking red.” (9/11 Report, p 6).

March 2001 – Italian intelligence warns of an al Qaeda plot in the United States involving a massive strike involving aircraft, based on their wiretap of al Qaeda cell in Milan.

July 2001 – Jordanian intelligence told US officials that al-Qaeda was planning an attack on American soil, and Egyptian intelligence warned the CIA that 20 al Qaeda jihadists were in the United States, and that four of them were receiving flight training.

August 2001 – The Israeli Mossad gives the CIA a list of 19 terrorists living in the US and say that they appear to be planning to carry out an attack in the near future.

August 2001 – The UK is warned three times of an imminent al Qaeda attack in the United States, the third specifying multiple airplane hijackings. According to the Sunday Herald, the report is passed on to President Bush a short time later.

September 2001 – Egyptian intelligence warns American officials that al Qaeda is in the advanced stages of executing a significant operation against an American target, probably within the US.

Lastly, on August 6, 2001, the President’s Daily Briefing, entitled “Bin Ladin Determined To Strike in US” warned that bin Laden was planning to exploit his operatives’ access to the U.S. to mount a terrorist strike: “FBI information… indicates patterns of suspicious activity in this country, consistent with preparations for hijackings or other types of attack.” (http://www.cnn.com/2004/images/04/10/whitehouse.pdf)

Condeleeza Rice responded, when being asked about the PDB at the Commission hearings, that “it wasn’t something that we felt we needed to do anything about”.

Also, as you know, there WERE Terrorist Acts perpetrated AFTER 9/11, in spite of Bush’s “tireless efforts,” both domestically and internationally planned. Apart from the example of Richard Reid, the “shoe-bomber” which was mentioned in the CNN article, here are some further examples:

    a) The Anthrax attacks
    b) The blowing up of the King Fahd Mosque in California
    c) Luke helder’s Pipebombing in the midwest
    d) Beltway Sniper Attacks
    e) University of Oklahoma bombing
    f) Chapel Hill incident
    g) Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle shooting
    h) The SUV incident in San Francisco, 2006
    i) Attempted Bombing of the Mexican Consulate, NYC
    j) Palm Beach arson incident, 2005
    k) Edgerton Women’s Care Center destruction, 2006
    l) Arson of Planned Parenthood in Virginia Beach
    m) Virginia Tech Massacre

Who was “asleep at the wheel”? Who is “technically correct”?

    3. You write “Bill Clinton had the two embassies in Africa destroyed.” With that logic, then, you should state the obvious: “George Bush bombed the Trade Towers.” This is disingenuous, false and cowardly “journalism”. I say “Shame” to you, Sir.

    4. You write Obama is “more concerned with giving health care to people who dont want to work rather than protecting this country which I think is actually in his job description.” Why would you resort to red-herring argumentation? This has nothing to do with Guiliani’s comments at all. Shame, again. Also, in response, isn’t a health plan part of the “protecting this country” mandate of a Presidential job description? Even the present Medicare system saves more lives each year than any number of terrorist attacks. Sounds like “protection” to me.

    5. In your response to Greg, above, you accuse Obama of “laziness” in dealing with the Middle East, in spite of the fact that in November the President outlined the first coherent Middle East foreign policy since the mid 1990s. He is, as I am sure you have heard, making the unpopular choice to send in a large increase of troops to Afghanistan to help secure the region. How is that lazy? Although George Bush was advised numerous times from top military brass that the real struggle against terrorism was in Afghanistan, he never spent as much engery there as in Iraq which, as I am sure you know, is a war of occupation, not terrorism. There is not, and has not been, a terrorist movement in Iraq. As I am sure you know, that war was begun by America invading a sovereign country under the false assumption (many say impeachable lie) that there were wmd’s. This, according to the United Nations, is an illegal war. Obama, on the other hand, is actively building a Mid-East policy that endeavors to fight terrorism and is taking steps to downsize American involvement and loss in Iraq, in other words undo damage done before his tenure. What was George Bush’s terrorism policy during his 2000 election run? You would not know because he did NOT have one. Where did Bush send in extra troops after 6-7 years of war? Iraq. Who is lazy again?

In summary Guiliani is not “correct” at all: there were both domestic and foreign terrorism in America under Bush’s watch. I hope to chalk this mis-step of his to senility, drunkenness, a loose tongue or brain freeze–at least that would be an ‘honest’ mistake. However, it is hard to not take these baseless, incorrect and deceptive comments as something more insidious–like revisionist history. I would hope that he clarifies his comments soon to ensure that this disturbing idea remains just that.

In summary, you too are not correct at all, Sir. You have not researched your facts, you have engaged in rhetorical false logic and more importantly have entered in on a debate on which you have no ability or understanding to add anything. You are playing partisan politics in its most vulgar form. You write only to support your party and have no respect for the truth or facts. Even the most stalwart GOPer must respond to Guiliani’s nonsense/lie with repugnance.

I too hope that you put more effort into your certified “Investigative Journalism” career. From my persective your comments suggest that this certification be stripped.

    You, Sir, are a buffoon.

    Sincerely,
    Leon Bloomgren

The larger issue here is that Mr Obama has failed the national security of this country miserably and he should be lucky to breath the same air as HERO MAYOR RUDOLF GUILIANI.

And why are you commenting on an article I wrote last year and totally out of context? Are you so crazy stalker or what? I am dissatisfied and irritated by your recklessness. You show absolutely zero respect for the good men and women serving this country overseas and all the people who have fought to pursue the terrible people behind 9/11. People like Mr. Guliani have every right to say what they want about terrorism, they are the experts.

In any event, you are absurd and your threats are meaningless. I find your writing quite typical of the radical liberals in this country who have neither reason, nor shame, faith nor wisdom. God bless!

  • You are correct! Stephen Colbert is an evil, vile, demon sent from hell and most likely a demon! He should be taken off of TV and hopefully into jail! He has sent more souls to Hell for watching his television show than Anton Lavey! And in case you can’t tell I like Mr. Colbert am being completely sarcastic! It’s satire! To compare his show with an al qaeda training camp is like comparing Hitler to Rodney Dangerfield. To stoop to an eighth grade level, you sir are an ass.

  • For a website based on a religion about love the word hate is used far too much. Reflect on your own behaviour before judging others

  • I don’t beleive the author of this article knows that the Colbert report is a fake news show intended for comedy. He’s not supposed to take anything seriously it’s all a joke and he’s the best in the world at it. I read it and for a while it seemed like an overly concerned mother was worried about her children being mindwashed into a more liberal point of view on the world, then it became a hate article with false information and shameful attacks on Stephen Colbert personally. Your evangelist ideas are what’s wrong with this country today and you inspire bigots throughout America.

  • Honestly, this article is the exact kind of writing I think Colbert would die for, it’s so ironic! Billings must be a political satire genius, I think he and Stephen should meet up.

  • Alright, I’m not even sure that it’s worth the time to respond to this article, as (judging from the comments alone) the people invested in defending its contents are extremely unlikely to change their minds. However, as a concerned Christian and INDEPENDENT voter, I feel as though I should put in my two cents, anyway.

First of all, Steven Colbert’s attempts to gain a semi-religious, fanatical following are part of his CHARACTER. Although the author of this article professes to understand that the show is fundamentally rooted in satire, he seems to be unable to grasp this simple concept. Incidentally, I believe that this is also behind his eating Doritos and drinking beer on the show; it’s making fun of the people who shamelessly promote products on their shows.

“Ah! I believe I will now take a break and enjoy a refreshing Bud Light with Lime!” –insert cheesy grin here–

I’m paraphrasing, but still! How on earth can you think that you (or his ‘immature’viewers) are supposed to take that seriously? He’s not trying to ingratiate himself with us; he’s making a joke! You know, because it’s on Comedy Central?

The man is not going to go to hell because he does not agree with you. Frankly, if anything is wrong with America today, it’s people like the person who wrote this. You’re making the rest of the Christians in the country look utterly ridiculous. Leaving out the fact that I think articles like this are fundamentally ugly and unnecessarily cruel (not to mention inaccurate and biased), America isn’t beholden to any one religion any more than it is beholden to any one man; that’s kind of what makes it America. Even if he is against the principals of Christianity, and I don’t think that he is, that does NOT make him fundamentally un-American as a result.

You are free to disagree with his points. You can dissect his arguments, and you can question his taste in jokes. I personally would not let kids under thirteen or so watch the program, simply because of the language that is sometimes used. However, it is WRONG to say that he is going to hell simply because you disagree with him. People do not go to hell because they are liberal anymore than they go to heaven simply because they voted for Bush in the 2004 elections; to say otherwise is to imply that you are voluntarily wearing the human equivalent of blinders.

As one last quick point, though, I’d like to say that he isn’t really liberal– whoever commented that he makes everybody look like an idiot is absolutely right. Or have you not seen his stuff targeting President Obama? Nobody is safe; that’s part of what makes it so refreshing.

  • Wow, it’s scary how many people think that Colbert is brainwashing people. If you really want to see brainwashing in action, listen to Glenn Beck, Hannity, or any of Fox news really. They’re morons, and I think they may be more hilarious than Stephen.
Actually I take that back. Stephen doesn’t talk about killing people nearly as much as Beck does. Violent much?

    Colbert Nation ftw, mothertruckers

  • I may be commenting a year late, but I randomly came upon this article and I find it quite infuriating. As a fifteen year old, I am supposedly one of the children or young adults (depending on who you ask) that this show is supposedly hurting.

Oddly enough, however, I find that T am not in the least hurt by Mr. Colbert’s antics. On the contrary, I look to Stephen Colbert the person as somebody of integrity and intelligence. Stephen Colbert the character provides me with entertainment and delights me with his bizarre take on world events.

It is true that sometimes Mr. Colbert calls upon his “Nation” of dedicated viewers to help him out. His causes, however, are always noble and “pro-American”, including sponsoring the Winter Olympics American speed skating team, as well as donating to various charities.

I guess my point is this: I am not stupid, and neither are many of the people who watch his show. Stephen Colbert does not brainwash us, he amuses us. And if you don’t find him funny, move on.

  • It is honestly a complete shame that some people who stumble across this article will think this is what all Christians are like. I am thoroughly disappointed with so many of the comments on here, what a horrible witness. Why not just love people instead of attacking people’s intelligence, homeland, political views, etc? And to think that “God hates him” or “you will burn in hell” can actually come out of people’s mouths makes me shudder.

I forgot that Jesus was a republican.

    • Hey Trev – You’re right. I’m ashamed to be one lumped into one of these pools of intolerant Christians. Jesus never did anything but love and forgive even the most evil of our brothers and sisters. The Right is wrong, and that is why I am now a Democrat.

  • Stephen Colbert actually plays a character that acts just like the “Christians” on thus site. So it’s funny how they hate him lol

  • the high and mighty righteousness of ultra-christians like you is what he mocks. it does not suprprise me that one of you wouldn’t enjoy it. but then humor is not a conservative trait and the show is not for you. its for the rest of us normal people who despise your phony piety and detest your utter hypocrisy- which indeed is the bread and butter of Colbert and Stewart – the ever present hypocrisy of your kind.

  • Ok, honestly? This show is a COMEDY. Let me repeat that… COMEDY! It isn’t meant to be taken seriously. There are worse shows out there that make fun of everything. South Park and Family Guy, for example. And you say we’re going down the drain because we’re drifting away from God? There are so many countries that are doing much better than we are and have only about a 10% religious population. I’m a first year college student and I know that. I honestly think there’s a separation of church and state for a reason. So we could treat everyone fairly! All mean are created equal.

You know what’s really funny? Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert’s shows have been serving as my news and Fox has basically turned into a comedy for me. Yes, they may mock everything but for a bit of a good reason. Right now this “War on religion” stuff is just funny. Yeah, the war on Christianity. The whole country is up in Christmas lights and we’ve had 43 consecutive christian presidents. Oh yeah, sounds horrible. By the way… the term “happy holidays” might be because Christmas and New Years are so close together that it’s easier to say “Happy Holidays!” instead of “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!”

You kind of made me sad and happy at the same time. Of all the things to be worried about you chose to worry about Stephen Colbert. Yeah, that’s gonna mess America up more than any other influence on kids. Ads come on everyday glorifying alcohol and smoking. Shows like 16 and pregnant making teen pregnancy look awesome. I think if Stephen Colbert is the worst to worry about we’re going to be ok.
