Avenged Seven Fold: Today’s Best Jesus Rock

I am afraid that when it comes to the hard rock music of today’s youth there isn’t much to praise. Over a decade ago “Creed” told us of the dangers of ignoring the lord and creating “My own Prison”. Then half a decade ago Flyleaf broke out and told us musically of the love of the lord. Now a new band has come to the forefront of today’s youth rock movement.
This band is known as Avenged Seven Fold, which is an illusion to the vengeance of the lord, spoken of in the Old Testament. Just minutes ago I heard their latest song while my grandson Jimmy was bringing me from the doctors office. The name of the song is “Welcome to the family” and speaks of the “family if Christ” that we all know so well as Christians. It starts out talking to today’s youth who have found theirselves on the path to damnation, and encourages them to turn to Jesus, and “join the family”. At the end of the song they tell fornicating sinners that they are “not invited” within the gates of heaven.
The band was formed in 1999 in Huntington Beach, California. Two of the band members took their musical pseudonyms from Genesis 4:24. Another member took the name of Christ as his last name. Several of their albums are “concept albums” that have biblical concepts; these albums are “Sounding the Seventh Trumpet”, “Waking the Fallen”, and “City of Evil”.
Despite their scruffy looks they are quite holy! Parents, this music is welcome inside your house!

I have also been quite fond of the Christian band “Venom”, especially their album “At War With Satan”. They talk about going to war against Satan and their name is derived from the fact that Satanists and Atheists and homogays spew venom from their mouths that can infect non-believers easily. It is a shame that they are not allowed in America anymore, mainly due to the liberals not liking how true and powerful their lyrics are.

I don’t think Avenged Sevenfold is a Christian band overall, there are some songs that are definitely considered to be inappropriately themed, and for a good reason, too. But there are a few songs that do come from the bible, or may speak to Christians, in a way. And yes, they drink and do drugs, but no, I don’t believe they are bad people. They don’t sleep with every girl on tour, like some people say, 2 of them are married, 1 is in a committed relationship, and Jimmy was married before he passed away. “God Hates Us” could definitely be sending a bad theme from a Christian point of view, but if you look at it a different way, it could say a different thing to you. Also, when they wrote that song they were mourning Jimmy, so it’s perfectly reasonable for them to think that anyway. I don’t think they can be classified as purely Christian or purely non-Christian, they are what they are and they have their own opinions.

Avenged Sevenfold is not Christian music. Welcome to the Family is NOT, I repeat, NOT a Christian song. Nowhere in the lyrics does it say anything about the family of Christ. It’s about joining the family of their fans.
As a long time Avenged Sevenfold fan, let me give you a few lyrical samples to consider.
Consider the song, ironically named, “A Little Piece of Heaven”. It’s a song that is about killing a woman, having sex with her corpse, then the corpse kills him, and they get married in hell. Sounds quite Christian-like, no? And here is a direct quote of their lyrics:

Hi, I would like to tell you something about this band. They are actually (shockingly) NOT a christrian band. What Christian band would create a song about murdering a girl, sleeping with her dead body, her soul coming back, killing the man who killed her, the two marrying and going on a killing spree? For that’s exactly what their song “A Little Piece of Heaven” says. In one of their songs they say that being an alcoholic is pretty much as bad as being a devout christian, so they’re going to walk right down the middle of the two roads. @Alec, I’ve been a hxc obsessed fan for almost 8 1/2 years. they are not an atheist band, if they were, they wouldn’t use references towards God (again, ex; Dear God, Gunslinger, Strength of the World) if anything, they are agnostic. @Hannah, the interview that you posted was from like 6 years ago, I have a magazine that was released in Oct 2010 that Matt said they do have a belief but are struggling due to losing Jimmy. They’ve come out in different interviews and said they are not a christian band, their lead singer has said (and I quote), “I do not believe in God. I do not believe in any higher power”. Oh my, I fell out of my chair laughing after I read this. I’ve been following the band from the very beginning and I can promise you they are not a “Christian friendly” band. They’ve constantly poked fun at religion. Johnny’s stage name isn’t to honor but to piss Christians off. If you’re interested, the song is about a guy who gets pissed off at his girlfriend so he kills her, “rip(s) her heart out right before her eyes”, then takes her dead corpse and fucks it. She then wakes up a zombie like creature looking for vengeance, killing the guy the same way. Then he wakes up a zombie and the two go on a kill spree, eating the brains of every living creature. Okay, I absolutely LOVE Avenged Sevenfold, and I am also a Christian, but they are NOT a Christian band, at all! Seriously, listen to some of their songs like “Little Piece of Heaven” or “God Hates Us”. Please, do research a band before declaring them Christian. A few of the members were raised in a religious household, but do not practice the religion, themselves. Furthermore, if you watch the documentary that the band released a few years ago, it tells how each member got their name and Johnny Christ chose his because he thought it would piss a lot of people off. Its nice that you see the good in things but I will say Avenged Sevenfold does not promote Religion or Satan. Although I think 2 members were actually raised Catholic. They truly are a brilliant band and good guys. Most of them are married and so the guitarists are not sleeping with eachother. I’m pretty sure they arent doing drugs and sleeping with different people every night unless its their wives, of course.

Ma’am, I won’t throw profanity-laden insults at you like most of the other commenters have, but you clearly didn’t do too much research. The band has said on numerous occasions that they are not a religious band. From an article on the band: “Although the band’s title and members’ sobriquets make obvious reference to religion, Shadows stated in a recent interview that they’re ‘not really religious at all.’ And there have been suggestions that Johnny Christ practices Paganism.”
I saw Avenged Sevenfold live a few months ago. Before playing “God Hates Us,” M. Shadows said something along the lines of “played this song at church, and under no circumstances are we allowed back.” They don’t dress the way they do to get fans–they were dressing goth/punk/metal BEFORE starting the band. But I’d say if the father of a band member is laughing hysterically and posting the link to your article for everyone else to laugh hysterically along with him, then I would definitely say that Avenged Sevenfold is NOT a Christian band, and will likely never be.

I am absolutely flabbergasted. The song, “Welcome to the Family”, if at all, is welcoming Avenged Sevenfold fans to their family, not Christians into the family of Christianity. A7X have stated many, many, many, many times that they are not religious. Their name came from the bible, because Matt was raised in a religious home (and the others may have been as well, I’m not sure). They have also wrote songs such as “Chapter Four” about the fall of man, “Beast and the Harlot,” about the fall of Babylon, and even songs like “The Wicked End,” “dust the apple off savor each bite, deep inside, you know Adam was right.” I can understand how someone could confuse them with a religious group but the fact is, they are not. They are not Christian rock and I am not dissing those who are Christian rock bands, but, Avenged are not. They are my absolute favorite band, I’ve been a faithful death-batist since 2003. actually Jimmy wrote Welcome to the Family, it was one of his babies, it’s about welcoming new fans to our crazy fucked up family, not a new drummer considering (when) Jimmy wrote it, it couldn’t be about a new drummer, which the only drummer they have welcomed is Arin, I’ve seen them 3 times & every single time before the play Welcome to the Family, they have everyone who has not seen them live raise their hand & then they welcome them to the fucked up family & I saw them with Arin twice, they welcomed him both times & introduced him like he was a part of the band unlike with Mike, they said “Avenged Sevenfold with Mike Portnoy”, they didn’t do that with Arin either time, they said “we’re Avenged Sevenfold”. I have to say I’ve been an Avenged Sevenfold fan for a long time, and honestly, it doesn’t matter to me whether they are religious or not. But I know they aren’t satanists. Also, “God Hates Us” was probably a song describing how they felt after Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan died. They felt like he was taken away from them too soon and they were angry at God, like many people are in situations like that. Now, I think this whole site is idiotic. I’ve read several articles that lack research, like this one. Like others I saw this article because of Synyster Gates’ father and after reading a few I couldn’t help but laugh. This site is ridiculous and I have a hard time believing it’s run by true Christians. I won’t say I’m the most perfect religious person in the world, but now that I think of it, and now that I think of all the things I’ve done–or haven’t done–I’m certainly a better Christian than most of you ever could be. Most of the articles on this site spread hatred and condemn people based on narrowminded opinions, when Christians are supposed to be tolerant and loving. I’m pretty sure after 12 years of Catholic school I’ve learned that Jesus wanted us to LOVE everyone. Am I the only one who still remembers the Golden Rule?
Secondly, the comments about their clothes: they really don’t dress that way anymore. It wasn’t used in an attempt to appeal to the teenage demographic. Sorry to burst your bubble. Though I love those fans, and I’ve acted like that myself, I feel like some of them give this band a bad name. Besides, should it really matter whether or not they’re religious? They’re a band whose music speaks to different people in different ways, and their music helps people through hard times. Honestly, though, I agree with the A7X fans. A lot of these comments given about their stage names and their band name are true. Syn and The Rev got their names one night when they were drunk. Syn shouted “I am Synyster Gates, and I am awesome!” Their band name was found in Genesis, 4:15, if I’m correct. It was in reference to Cain and Abel. That’s where the song “Chapter Four” came from. A couple of them might be religious, but they aren’t a Christian band. I’m sorry to break it to you.

Some of the arguements on here have been amusing, especially the ones that have no idea what they’re talking about & can’t back it up but the others have pissed me off because it’s just ignorant & they get mad because someone has called them out & they can’t back it up. I’ve been a fan & obsessed with these guys ever since summer 2003 when I heard Unholy Confessions & they’ve saved my life countless times, for them to get back on that stage so soon after Jimmy, it means the world to me & they truly are my heroes for that because they didn’t have to do that, I wouldn’t have blamed them if they quit, I woulda supported them if they had because I couldn’t imagine the pain they feel every time they look behind them & Jimmy’s not there, they truly are the strongest men to go thru that every night of every tour they have done & will do.
