When It Comes to The Phish, Music Censorship Is Not Enough

No, a simple act of God is not enough to stop those in pursuit of profit and the profane. Schools in Bethel, New York are forced to close when a fanatical cult rolls into town. Concerned families know to protect their children first. Elsewhere, caravans of hippies in search of marijuana kicks and sexual debauchery push local police forces to the breaking point. Once again, summer has become an excuse for unholy heights of hedonism. What is the common thread of all of these incidents? The music group The Phish.
It seems like only yesterday that parental organizations rose up to protest the explicit lyrics of performers like Frank Zappa and Quiet Riot. Rap music drew special attention and today society is far better informed about the dilemma of ghetto excess. Susan Baker testified before Congress that, “There certainly are many causes for the ills in our society, but it is our contention that the pervasive messages aimed at children which promote and glorify suicide, rape, sadomasochism, and so on, have to be numbered among the contributing factors.”
For The Phish, the graphic content of their songs is certainly worthy of regulatory attention. Whether it’s popular hits such as “Colonel Forbin’s Accent” (communist revolution), “Mighty Quinn” (LSD), “Meatstick” (homosexuality) or “Big Ball Jam” (schizophrenia), their agenda is reckless enough. Yet times have changed; album sales no longer drive the music industry. The advisory labels stickered on store products are ineffective when children are downloading songs directly from illegal websites. These issues are moot, however, when you consider the aggressive tactics of rock band The Phish.
More than any other group today, The Phish makes an active effort to skirt federal censorship laws by going out in the field to recruit young people into their disturbing lifestyle. With utmost delight, they have set their sights on the alluring, delicate men of our small towns. They ferret out the naïve, the innocent. They lust for those who do not know better. What makes this agenda all the more offensive is the focus on middle- and upper-middle-class suburban children of Caucasian descent who are particularly vulnerable to harsh urban cries. Asians and Africans are not drawn into this world. For all intents and purposes, this music does not exist in Europe or the Middle East. But here in America, fandom begins between the ages of 14 and 20 among non-partnered males. Females make up approximately 15-20% of this organization.
This questionable interest in single white teens is essential for a message that codifies barbaric rebellion into an easily-accessible and simplistic form. This is not Blank Panther activism, nor is it the depravity of the homosexual movement. Rather, it is a far more subtle form of subversion and hate. Irregardless, the results are just as terrifying.
Young men are normally drawn to the Phish out of an inability to properly socialize with their more popular peers. These are not your high school athletes or honor students, but rather those who may suffer from acne and an unfamiliarity with members of the opposite sex (for example…). To carry them through the crisis of puberty, they seek refuge in other outcasts, believing there is strength in their awkward numbers. Male friendship is passed around as easily as a marijuana bong hit in this community of “Phishheads.” Secretly, beneath all that camaraderie, there is an inexplicable desire to sneak away with a female who may be pliable to a young man’s harsh needs. Yes, these kids suffer from extremely active but misguided sexual libidos. They use inexpensive, loose clothing to cover the crude manifestations of their rising urges. Even in the concerts themselves, unplanned erections are common and not necessarily something they try to hide. To irritate those of the older generation, these people greet each other with a slow-witted slang that includes the words “brah” and “dude” in every sentence. Sadly, gangster hand gestures are also widespread.
As one progresses from a new person, or a “newbie,” to greater prominence in this community, long hair is grown. The length and odor of one’s dreadlocks is a sign of seniority. They become co-dependent on other Phishheads, meeting up on private websites where they trade implausible stories of conjugal conquests from the comfort of dormrooms at expensive liberal colleges. A fully committed fan becomes a “Lot Wookie,” someone so dedicated to this cult they need not enter the confines of the concert hall to claim the funky fruits of the The Phish world. The wookie is a veritable throwback to medieval man, toothless from addiction and covered in filthy rags and intense bodily smells. He will use far-fetched tales of swapping hugs with band members backstage to score baked goods and raunchy interactions behind port-o-johns. Newbies often fall for these tricks and turn their mother’s cars into sweaty, no-holds-barred “crash pads.”
A “Hippie Chick” is one of those rare females in this swarmy environment. She is highly prized, despite her promiscuous and thieving persona. She often goes into public without a bra and will intentionally brush her breasts against every man she meets. The tight tie-dye shirts and profuse sweat reveals the pert blossoming of her chest. This prideful exhibitionism can be used to lure the unsuspecting into assignations that may end in a lost wallet. Afterwards, she will return to the bejeweled arms of her older, jaded hippie mate. He will pimp her out from one parking lot to the next until he suspects she’s suffering from either pregnancy or sobriety. From there, she will easily feign an overdose to fall into some befuddled newbie’s embrace, thereby baptizing him into the nefarious ways of the wookie.
For families, having such a child is a terrible badge of horror. These are offspring who have rebelled against the professionalism and morality of their parents. They have no desire for stable careers or Christian marriage. Mothers are pushed into shame as equally as fathers find outrage. Siblings of a Phishhead suffer as well. Brothers and sisters can be the target of mockery in their communities. Young children are bullied in school because of their older one’s queer habits. Yet the Phishhead will not care one bit for those left behind in his musky wake.
Phishheads avoid entry into adulthood as long as possible. They inhabit a prolonged adolescence fueled by socialist delusions and an obsession with anal sex. These lascivious lifestylists tend to find seasonal work as horticulturalists and camp counselors, or else in bakeries and circuses. If all else fails, you will see them pursuing felonious lives as smugglers or internet scammers. As has been discussed before, Phishheads are notoriously unreliable as employees and are hired at grave risk (see the column, “Should I Hire a Hippie?” for more information).
This crisis of The Phish highlights the conflict between art and degeneracy in America today. The group’s songs lack the soulfulness of gospel, the patriotism of country, the sophistication of Brahms and the ineffably sublime heights of Wagner. They can barely approach the discernable rhythms of pop sensations Dave Mathews and Katy Perry. Instead, they confuse the senses with paranoid drumming sessions (instigated by known transvestite John Fishman) and abrasive guitar jams (by lead perfumer Trey Pistachio). In a misguided attempt to hide this horrendous auditory assault, they employ cheap and gaudy light shows. The pastel greens and fluorescent orange beams flash out into the audience to shock one so intensely that any last remnant of common sense is lost.
From that exalted position up on the stage, The Phish promotes an egregious anti-American agenda that not only includes pot smoking and sloth, but socialism and political terrorism. They encourage a forced communalism, a saccharine notion of shared labor and easy women. Hardcore ecological ideologies are the basis for their food and purchasing habits. They consume an outrageous range of narcotics beyond marijuana, from hashish and mushroom hallucinogenics, to medical nitrous oxide and “roofies.” That frothy drug haze opens their mouths wide to the queer agenda next stuffed down their throats– false idol worship.
Yes, to maintain this lifestyle a Phishhead must submit fully to the cult of Trey worship. Ultimately, they get down on their knees before those false prophets up on the stage. They substitute faith in a higher God to the egotistical pursuit of the band’s next venue. Setlists are traded like sacred scrolls. Sleeping arrangements in the backs of old vans are open to one and all. Clearly, this leads to profound carnal violations, yet most will be too stoned to remember on whom they ejaculated last night.
Much like other celebrities today, such as the Kardashians and Lady Gaga, the band demands they you remake your life in their image. You must dress and act like them, eat and dance just like them. They want you to go down that dark alley no matter how dangerous it is. But are these children even aware of what the endgame is of these notorious predators? A group that so actively seeks to insert itself into the lives of children, plies them with drugs and asks them to undress into a new lifestyle is undoubtedly heinous.
Those of us who care about the future of America should surely take note of The Phish’s antics on the road. Do you even know if your town is next on their hit list? When and where will these felons strike again? They have an avowed dislike for the heartland and their current tour schedule shows an interest in coastal America. There, the hunting grounds are ripe. They have even taken aim at the traditions of the Fourth of July and the Super Bowl with their own offensively named concert series, “The Super Balls” which promises to outrage those of us who believe in American morality to the point of ethical delirium.
When you consider how a child’s life can be ruined by such an obsession, it is vital we make every effort possible to stop The Phish. Demanding that the FCC censor their music is surely a wise first step, but we need to do more. We need to organize and protest. We need to pressure our local governments and concert halls to deny them access. In the end, we cannot knowingly allow the young people of this nation engage in a lifestyle that forces them to be shunned by their former friends, disowned by their families and hunted by the police. It is a disturbing future and all effort should be made to prevent this great nation from falling prey to The Phish’s notorious agenda.

I for one am not at all a fan of Phish. That being said, I have never laughed so hard until I read this FALSIFIED CHRISTIAN SCARE TACTIC PROPAGANDA!! I don’t really care for Phish much, but I have been to their shows. A few observations:
1. They are not “The Phish”. Just Phish.
2. There is usually a 50/50 ratio of men/women at these events, and the girls are usually quite attractive.
3. There isn’t any hate anywhere in their music. They’re hippies, not metal heads.
4. You find people from all walks of life, of every race, of every background, at a Phish show. Jocks, hippies, blacks, whites, they’re all there.
5. There is a sense of brotherhood at these shows you won’t even find in most churches. People there are kind to each other, watch out for each other, and treat each other as they would want to be treated. In many ways, they’re more christlike than many christians.
6. Which draws me to my final conclusion about you and this article… Matthew 7:1. Read it to yourself over, and over, and over.

I have to say that this article is completely offensive, and for you to assume such atrocious things about all people who attend these concerts is trite and absurd. I am a Christian myself married to a man who just recently went to one of their concerts. He is educated, gainfully employed and of the most well respected one of his peers. Joining him were several other married couples, as well as unattached men and women, all who are highly funtional and undepraved individuals. They go for their love of music, the instrumental compilations that move them. I would have gone myself but am too far pregnant to be subject to such high volumes. That would include all concerts, even Casring Crowns. None of the people I know are theiving, whoring, heroin addicts like you portray. They wear normal clothes, undergarments included and keep them on. They believe in God, or a higher power.
What I would really like to know is, as a Christian, how is it that you judge and condemn so quickly, instead of reaching out and positively try to affect change? Who died and made you God?

i’ve been to several “The Phish” shows and I have seen the cesspool of sin firsthand… People like myself who have real experience at these hippie rituals have given Pastor Billings more than enough primary information regarding the concerts. And I was almost raped at one on two different occasions. Some of the lot wooks spiked my non-alcoholic beer with the drug GHB, aka the “date rape drug” and then took me back to their camper where they stole my wallet and attempted to sodomize me.. If it wasn’t for one of my colleagues rescuing me, I could have been raped and possibily given the AIDS virus

If you would actually read the comments this question has been answered.. For the safety of Dr. Billings, he does not attend these events .. Some of the younger reporters like myself go to the concerts and get firsthand information for him .. we’re younger so we can fit in as undercovers.. I’ve been to several of the big phish festivals, including Big Cypress, IT, Coventry and Festival 8… as well as many more shows … I watched the cult like atmosphere firsthand at Big Cypress when Trey Allagassio tried to summon demons by leading his coven through an 8 hour set all through the night.. it was quite disturbing.. and thankfully, due to my efforts, 16 concert goers were arrested and convicted of drug trafficking and conspiracy

I am also a christian, and although I generally do not attend phish concerts it’s not for any other reason than because they never seem to mesh with my child rearing schedule.

I am a Christian born and raised, and I happen to LOVE Phish. It really hurts me to see fellow Christians so blindly assault something that has brought me so much joy in some of my darkest hours. Except these elements are ALL IMPROVISED.
God gave the The Boys enormous talent, and to condemn the band based on the behavior of a margin of its fan base is to deny God the glory due to him.
If all the author can see is Satan at a Phish show, then I feel very sorry for him. If you are a parent reviewing this hedonistic filth, please be very careful. Despite my abhorrence to hippies and their sick lifestyle, their music has a strange satanic lure that if not heeded, can penetrate the thought processes. This is by design.
I was listening to a group of three cd’s that I confiscated from my son. All that was written on the inlay card was “Phish” (without “the”,) a group of numbers resembling a date and what looked to be incoherent words listed in what appeared to be lunatic ramblings. I later learned that this is called a set list.
When I played one of these cd’s, the sounds and whistling outbursts of noise contained within allowed satan’s grasp to take control on my right foot. I discovered that it was tapping softly to the pace of the crazy beats coming from the speakers.
I immediately cut the power to the stereo and lashed my foot and leg with my exorcism wand until it was bloody but motionless, freed of satan. Better to cut the foot off than allow satan to find purchase.

I have been to 80+ Phish shows. I will be at Super Ball. I was in attendance at 3 prior Phish Festivals. I was in Bethel, NY for the 3 Phish shows…and then did the next 15 across the East Coast. All four members of the band are classically trained college university graduates with an extreme talent for writing and performing music and are not members or leaders of any cult.

This article is so wildly inaccurate that I don’t even know where to begin. I am a Christian. I went to Christian grade, middle, and high school and I am currently enrolled in a graduate degree program at a Christian university. I was popular in high school and college. I played sports in high school (unfortunately, I didn’t make the teams in college due to my size and comparative level of talent). My fiance, whom I will be marrying next month is popular with her friends, played high school and college sports, and one of the most kind, caring, and selfless people one can hope to meet. Oh, and one more thing, we love Phish and have attended many Phish shows. I have never seen sexual activity at any of the shows. I have never seen or heard of a riot at any of these shows. When I first started reading this I thought this was a piece of satire, but the Arthur is dead serious. As a phan, I can not tell you how wrong you are. Are there some bad apples in the group? Yes there absolutely are, but to condem a whole group on the actions of a few is just silly. Phish phans are some of the nicest , courteous of both individuals and thier environments, and honest group of people that I have ever come across.
The Arthur calls himself a investigative journalist but seems to have done very little research and little field work. This article also illustrates my problem with organized religion. It breads closed minded sheep who can not think for themselves let alone outside of the box. You are entitled to your opinions though (as am I) for this is a free country, but please stop trying to shove your beliefs down my throat. Thanks.

Hilarious. Lincolin Hodges, Are you the same pshycopath that gave me a ride after the 1999 Ames show? Car broke down on the way down to the show from MPLS and we had to Hitch to make it to the show just in time. On the way out we got a ride from some dude to the MN border. I can’t believe im going over this for the 100th time… Im not sure if you understand how journalism works? the person writing the story isn’t necessarily the one who experienced the event firsthand.. in this case Brother Billings is relying on the testamony of several people on Christwire as well as dozens external from the site … I’ve been to almost 100 of these shows to do research for Dr. Billings, as well as to assist law enforcement in arresting drug addicts and dealers at these events.. I can attest to these things firsthand.. Members of Christwire did primary research for Dr. Billings, so yes technically his article is secondhand research.. but if you knew a thing about journalism.. you’d know that secondhand research is just as valid as primary in many cases.. today i awoke in a cold sweat and immediately turned on my Billy Graham vhs casette tape from his 1987 “convert those heathen jews” tour. to my surprise it is almost like the Rev. Graham predicted in that 1987 vhs tape.
The heathen ginger leader Tray Antipasta even sang of the devil going down to gerogia looking for a sould to steal. he said it plain as day his intention to rape and convert whole armies to the side of darkness. To off set this demon curse i had to read several key bible passages relating to exorcism and demonic possession. Dear Mr. Billings,
You are a wack-a-doodle. I will just comment on only one of the many unusual remarks you made: Young men wear “loose clothing to cover the crude manifestations of their rising urges”. How on earth do you know that?
I am not a huge fan of Phish, but I have been to enough of their concerts and others like them, to know that the majority of the fans are loving, kind people who, outside of their chemical fetishes, live more in the spirit of what Christ wanted us to relay than most other people out there. They are just in different costumes, and don’t want to follow society’s rules. But deep down, they are good souls.
Have a conversation with some of them, and, as a good Christian, you’ll realize they are good people who want to do good to others as well.

I have a question for the many posters who claim that this band’s name is simply Phish and not The Phish: Why does Mr. Anastasio himself refer to his band as The Phish?
Like Brother Glosser, I have attended multiple “concerts” by these evildoers in an effort to catch those peddling their heroin pills and attempting to rape unsuspecting young boys. Usually I listen to tapes of Billy Graham sermons or Jerry Falwell’s autobiography on my Walkman to protect my ears from the slime The Phish members are producing.
However, 11 years ago I was in Indiana protecting a noble Christian community from the sin and moral decay Phishheads were attempting to infect their small town of Noblesville with. Towards the end of the show my Walkman stopped working (I suspect that a vile Phish fan stole my perfectly good batteries and replaced them with ones that didn’t work).
Before I could escape the noise coming from the stage, I distinctly heard Mr. Anastasio say, “We are The Phish from Vermont.” I think you all owe a huge apology to Dr. Billings. But we all know that Phishheads never apologize for anything, no matter how wrong they are, so I won’t be holding my breath.

Where to start… The band goes by the name Phish, not The Phish. Simply enough, but an error none the less.
“Mighty Quinn” as you mention is not a Phish song but a tune written by Bob Dylan. (Do you not have a copy editor checking facts) Dylan himself has said that the title character refers to actor Anthony Quinn’s role as an Eskimo in the 1959 movie The Savage Innocents. A little bit of research goes a LONG way..

I am a Christian born and raised, and I happen to LOVE Phish. It really hurts me to see fellow Christians so blindly assault something that has brought me so much joy in some of my darkest hours. In the midst of the hardship of my Knob Year at the Citadel, Trey’s soaring, melodious solos were beauty in a world ugly and clouded with fear. It was while listening to a Reba jam, after an especially difficult week, that I first surrendered completely to the Lord.
While “lot wookies” and what I call “Dead Dreggs” (Boomer Dead Heads that follow Phish) are insidious at shows, the majority of Phans view them as nuisances. While drug use is prominent, there no compulsory element to such behavior.
I love going to shows because it is some of the most technically proficient, powerful music one will ever have the opportunity to hear. “Confusing” solos often feature the same inverted modal scales, key changes and scale play that are present in the works of great composers. Except these elements are ALL IMPROVISED.
God gave the The Boys enormous talent, and to condemn the band based on the behavior of a margin of its fan base is to deny God the glory due to him.
If all the author can see is Satan at a Phish show, then I feel very sorry for him. Only someone with a cold heart could be able to ignore the elemental joy, beauty and fellowship that forms the nucleus of what Phish is all about. God Bless Phish. More importantly, God Bless this author, for he is truly blind.
