The photos of “the riot” are not from the festival. They’re from the mini “riot” that took place outside Grauman’s during a showing of a documentary about the festival. And it was about the most tame riot ever, with no deaths, injuries, or property damage reported. And I know this, because it happened less than a mile from my work. Most of the “rioting” was people planking in the street and like… meditating and stuff. Mostly just refusing to leave.

I was a Raver from 1991 to 1993 in LA and did a little raving out in Atlanta for a while, and I still go to the occasional event. Sure there are a few bad apples in every bunch, but the majority of us who attend these events do so in a peaceful and respectful manner. It’s all about Peace, Love, Respect and Unity; kinda sounds like something Jesus would say. I want to start off by saying that i believe in god and i grew up in church. With saying that i also want to say that I AM A RAVER!!! I am a raver but I am not addicted to any drugs nore do I worship satan.

I was a “raver” (sorry, that term just makes my skin crawl) in the past. Like, long past. I’m 30. In the late 90s. We did a ton of drugs, we slept with whomever we felt like, and yes, we all worshipped house music and made it seem like some rainbow hippie fest commune. It was mad fun. It was also dangerous, although we were oblivious to it at the time.
Did we have a fucking blast? Oh, my god, yes. Would I do things the same again knowing what I know now? Probably not.
You are correct, we did not worship satan or whatever that nonsense was they spewed in this article. But I learned in that scene you don’t have to be a drug addict to do drugs, and one SLIGHT wrong turn can put you six feet under. If not you – maybe one of your friends.
Electronic music can be wonderful. Moby is a god to me. Some is too cheesy to bear. It’s the recent insurgence of candy ravers that concerns me. We didn’t even care for them during the birth of rave, which I lived through.
I just feel like modern “ravers” don’t understand that those days are over, cannot be recreated, and there are different ways to appreciate electronic music than try and mimic a dead fad.
Us older 30-something past ravers are kinda laughing at it, to be honest. Just listen to whatever kind of music you like and call it a day. Rave in and of itself really is over. The music, of course, will always linger – which is lovely.

I’ve been promoting EDM music in Hollywood for over 5 years now, and in fact, held a residency at the venue just above where this took place (hollywood and highland). While I agree that there are some unsavory things that take place at these events at times, I have to say, Mike, you’re out of your mind. In my 5 years of promoting and 10 years of going to festivals, I’ve never witnessed any of what you described in your article. I wouldn’t even know where to find this sort of stuff. Force-fed yellow cake icing? Forced hazing rituals in pits? Acid-induced?…Where do you even find acid these days? Where do you get your stats for that mysterious pie chart you drew up? Kaskade didn’t even release his first track till 2001….The facts here are so skewed it’s scary.
While I do not condone what this crowd did, and I realize that drug use does take place with some of these crowds, these accusations are outlandish. I’m fine with the scene being criticized for events like this and for promiscuous drug use…but do your homework Mike. I’m rather curious where your “facts” and statistics came from.. For example, your pie-graph of the alleged crimes committed at EDC seems to be missing any source of information (nevertheless a credible one). I’m curious if “Frat boys plied with marijuana droplets and then throbbing gristled” is how the cops who dealt with the alleged crimes would put it (I think not). How many crimes were commited? what percentage of EDC goers actually committed one of these “crimes”? I would not be surprised if the number was actually quite low. This is one of the most misinformed, slanderous, christian propaganda laced, nonsense of an article I have ever seen. You can’t really be serious with this? For one its not the Electric Daisy Carnival in Hollywood. EDC was in Las Vegas this year. They were premiering a movie that was filmed at EDC in Vegas earlier this year. Kaskade did not organize the event he just happened to be playing at the movie premiere. He tweeted that he would be playing and I don’t think he expected anything like what happened. Now with that being said, there are a lot of ignorant, immature, and just not all that intelligent people who go to electronic music shows or “raves”. But a lot of similar people if not the same go to many other types of musical shows or events and act just as stupidly so it is unjust, ignorant, naive, and just stupid to call out and stereotype electronic music as a drug filled orgy because true fans of the music don’t act like that and don’t need drugs of any sort to enjoy the music.
