Muhammad Ali….. In 1975, Muhammad Ali was 33 years old and world heavyweight boxing champion. With a record of 45 and 2, in 47 professional fights and 37 amateur ones he had only been knocked down 2 times. Ali was a well-known draft dodger, who refused to go to Vietnam, because he “opposed violence”.
Chuck Wepner….. In 1975, Chuck Wepner was 41 years old, overweight, out of shape, and well past his prime. He was a former U.S. Marine who enlisted and served his country proud.
Muhammad Ali handpicked Wepner as an opponent to score an easy victory against. Ali was guaranteed 1,500,000 million dollars for the fight. Wepner was guaranteed $100,000 for the fight, more than he had ever made in his life.
No one expected much out of Wepner, but he showed what America is made of.
