“LillyHammer” TV Show Reveals the Corrupt, Alcoholic Culture of Socialist Norway
I had the great displeasure of receiving a promotional copy of a new television show the other day. It contains hours of sex, immorality and mafia gangs that prowl lunatic disco clubs for drunken victims. The program is called LillyHammer and it depicts the tragic European nation of Norway. It will come as a shock to American audiences to see the severe alcoholism and political corruption, the gambling and the abject poverty that defines the Norwegian culture. These are a lonely, bitter people who know nothing of Jesus Christ. They look sickly from the dark, snowy weather. The children grow up without fathers and the women have sexual intercourse with any man who crosses their path.
LillyHammer tells the story of an American businessman who travels to Norway in search of work. He ends up in the city of Lillyhammer, in the northern section of the country, where the Olympics were held in 1994. Since the Olympics, the place has fallen on difficult times. Unemployment is high, street crime is common and government corruption is widespread. The local residents are mostly alcoholics, wandering from one bar to the next as they wait for their welfare checks. The buildings look abandoned and most inhabit trailer park-like structures. They wear brightly colored costumes, filthy with beer stains and cod grease, to hide their misery. They eat small portions of food and are usually so poor that they must fish in frozen ponds for their next meal.
Most of Norway’s problems can be traced back to the fact that the country practices an extreme form of socialism, which very much borders on communism. Since World War II, they have been a nation of appeasement and weakness. Most live off government assistance and theft, hoping for a paycheck from their municipalities instead of actually doing something worthwhile with their lives. This is revealed with painful detail in the television show and it is a sad fate indeed.
The program itself is structured around Steven VanZandt, an American actor, who opens a disco club in Lillyhammer. He quickly attracts the mafia elements and several strong-armed men offer to beat rivals on his behalf. The local officials arrive wanting their bribes and a lonely Norwegian woman named Sigrid Haugli is so desperate for money she throws herself into Steven’s lap for erotic relations. In many ways, Sigrid, played by actress Marian Saastad Ottesen, is your typical lady from Norway. She is attractive but drunk with a child she barely notices. She is blindly socialist, supporting the radical, anti-Christian agenda of her federal government at every turn. Despite her beauty, she seems empty inside, as if she’s simply yearning for the healing power of Faith.
Trond Fausa Aurvag is another player in the drama. Unfortunately, his English is terrible so it will be very difficult for American viewers to understand him. He is the drunken sidekick to VanZandt, and is cast as a hipster version of Matt Damon with crooked teeth and a beer belly. He is uneducated and mentally clumsy, a common aspect in Norway where inept public schools fail to meet even the lowest standards of American acamedia.
Vivacious actress Laila Hovland plays the local police chief and she is clearly the most talented member of the show, although her obvious skill makes one wonder why she would degrade herself in such a pornographic role. However, Lalia is so tender and compassionate that one hopes she ultimately finds real love in the later seasons of LillyHammer.
The only other respectable player on display here is the impressively handsome Sven Nordin, who has that hearty Northern European beauty about him, whether he’s dressed smartly in a blue blazer and a kerchief, or strutting about in all his hairy shirtlessness. The man is a true delight to watch on the screen and made the experience of sitting through two episodes of this show slightly bearable. He has fantastic teeth, which is quite unusual for the Norwegians, and a playful, delightful head of hair. When it comes to Sven, the great mystery is why there aren’t more fansites on the world wide web dedicated to this man. He is one of Norway’s few national treasures.
The great drawback of LillyHammer is the obscure and difficult language its characters speak. It is harsh and crude, sounding almost like an alcoholic burp interrupted by an attempt to vomit a heavy fried fish meal. Watchers in America will undoubtedly find the Norwegian way of speaking both offensive and laughable and it’s a shame the dubbing is not better.
The backdrop of the city of Lillyhammer and the environment of Norway is another poor choice. It is so desolate and gruesome that the series is depressing to watch. Denmark, to the South, offers a far more festive, joyful atmosphere and one wonders why the show wasn’t filmed there. Or maybe Sweden to the West, for example, where the mountain peaks are inspiring, the ski resorts are luxurious, and the girls are truly gentle and angelic. The grim, angry women of Norway are no comparison.
Ultimately, American parents are warned not to let children under 21 watch LillyHammer. For adults, it has a limited educational value as an example of what poverty-stricken European socialism truly looks like. It is sad to witness a once great nation fall into a pit of corruption and alcoholism. Let us pray with American faith and wisdom that someday Norway will find itself again on the Righteous Path!
LillyHammer is only available in Norway and on the movie website Netflix. It is not yet aired on American television in America.

Many of the famous old countries of Europe have turned their backs on their heritage to take up socialism, the green movement and outright Soviet communism. The arabs are very big in these place and they really are losing their cultural identity. Norway is maybe the worst case, but it’s also happening in France and England and Denmark. These people just get so addicted to welfare and the fears of “global warming” as promoted by world government organizations, all national independence is lost. I feel sad for Norway. The women used to considered beautiful and the men were strong. I did not know alcoholism was so common there now. You would hope the Norweigan people would be stronger than that.

Oh its not that bad, sure we burn churches but that just an old habbit, we`re not too fond of the whole church-thing and the viking blood makes us act. Being a norwegian, born and raised in Norway and having an interest in the country I can honestly say this is the best place on earth. We have the oil money and plenty of it, on average every norwegian is a millionaire, all 5 million of us. Norway has no debt. We have a great education system and a great social security system. The biggest downside I can think of is the cold and harsh winter. Besides that its a true wonderland. Yes, its the most expensive country in Europe, but we dont care becasue we have the money. This piece really helps those of us here in the United States understand why those Norwegian immigrants migrating to the United states preferred the most inhospitable areas of the country – like Wisconsin, Alaska and Minnesota. Of course this might have been a ruse to eat salted fish and drink too much.
I agree that Sven Nordin very well could be the most famous actor in Norway, but that is really like being the smartest kid in special ed, it doesn’t mean much outside the perimeter of that corral.

The red-green norwegian government in its quest for being perceived as enviromentally friendly has put the norwegian trolls on the red-list, banning the killing and stuffing of these creatures. American tourists will therefore not be able to buy stuffed trolls in the norwegian souvenir shops in the future. Since the trolls are no longer culled, they can now grow big and dangerous, and have become a pest at nighttime in remote mountainous areas in Norway. Maybe well intended, but the socialist government keeps making problems like these for ordinary people. Another issue is that in order to save energy and comply with the Kyoto protocol, they even discuss turning off the very popular midnight sun attracting so many tourists to Norway in summer time. They also plan to close the fjords at nighttime to save money.

Maybe i was a bit unclear in my last remark. What i mean is that this website is establised by to guys who dont share the values of the right-wing christian conservatives. I am afraid you write without knowing where they all come from? We are not happy with all foreigners coming to our country, as some are not behaving very well. Some are also so strained from war events that they are unstable and need help they cannot get where they come from. We have etnic Norwegians too in the same group of misfits. Each day you have the same with Mexicans and others, and even bad behaviour from a lot of US-citizens too. We all have good and bad guys, I think.
But the big majority is coming here to participate and do their best to “deserve” to be here, some for more than 40 years already. We could not have had the same standard and quality of life if they did not come and stay, doing a lot to for the benefit of all.
We do not allow or have any food stamps, etc. here so all have to pay the prices. And the big majority has a good life, even up in the coldest north, where you experience Aurora Borealis, or Northern Light in the winter time.
Visit us and learn more about the strange Norwegian. May be you will change your view. We are grateful for assistance but we like to decide about when and where, based on our own free will and mind.

Dear Stephenson,
Thank you for writing with such candor about a painful topic. I’ve been living in Norway for the last 20 years, and can confirm that society here has drastically deteriorated in the last decade.
If you know your way around, most of the unpleasant aspects of this society can be relatively easily avoided. Restricting your outdoor hours to between 9 AM and 3 PM usually avoids being confronted with the worst alcoholics, who usually sleep off their intoxixation during these hours. Also I recommend altogether avoiding the main street of Oslo, Karl Johan’s street. What used to be the pride of the capital, this street is now reduced to a trading ground for home-made alcohol and prostitutes.
Of course, this is nothing compared to what is happening in the high north, where Lillyhammer is located. I recommend staying out of this part of the country altogether, but if you must visit, the city of Vinstra is probably the best place to go. The city is usually safe until 6 PM, when the government-mandated curfew starts.
I hope this practical advice on how to stay out of trouble in Norway can be helpful to any young American who is brave enough to come over and try to help us out of this deep crisis.

Thank you for your honesty, my friend. It’s so important that more people from Norway speak up and speak loud about the destruction of their culture. It does sound like a very difficult place to live and rather depressing if you ask me. If the Norwegians can organize an effort to ask other peoples for prayer and guidance, I know many in America would be more than happy to help. No one in this world should go hungry, whether it’s in their souls or in their stomachs. I have heard from people willing to give and help the people but we must first see the men and women of your homeland accept their problems. I love the idea of organizing a campaign to send Bibles to Norway! Many churches in our country do this to Africa and it’s very successful.
The unfortunate truth is that we also suffer from sexuality immorality a great deal in the U.S. Right now, we are debating homosexual “marriage” and abortion, two issues which are very important to me. I know Christians need to affirm their importance in our culture and maybe this is the sign God is waiting for. Be well, my young friend.

There are no more athletes left. Norway was once the #1 winter sport nation. Today we can barely send anyone sober enough to compete. It is such a shame and my heart cries.
When it comes to the economy, Norway are bankrupt. No more fishing and no more farming. The prices are so high that no one can afford proper food anymore. 80% of the population eat McDonalds hamburgers 3 to 5 days a week as their main food source, because it is cheap. Beer costs $0.4 and mineral water $6. Anyone wonder why kids as young as 20 prefer beer? THEY CAN NOT AFFORD mineral water or Coca-Cola. On top of this, obesity are marching in accross all of Norway.
Why is the religion dying in Norway? Did you know that church burning and Black metal rock music is very popular in Norway? God has left and the new gods are Jack Daniels and McDonalds.

Than you, Reverend. Indeed I have heard it mentioned that satanism is popular in Norway. During my research, I discovered that Twilight is one of the biggest cultural events in Norway in the past year and that surprised me. The largest Facebook group in Norway is about the vampire show. Reply: You will not find any place in Norway with curfew. NOT AT ALL! We had that ONLY during the WWII with German occupancy.

We do not have a free trade of selling liquers here as US have. You have to buy the Jack Daniels in the monopoly and so it has been for many years.
We are comfortable with our alcoholic policy, even when the prices are high.

We still are in the leader group. Last weekend Norwegians conquered 4 gold- and 1 bronze medals in biathlon. We have winning teams, which are and have been at the top level over years, even now, in most winter sports, and in some few summer sports as well. Javelin: Norwegian with Olympic, world and European top score for an example.
Compared with our small population we are high ranked all over.

Norway has the lowest unemployment in Europe even now- under 4 %. The currency is strong: NOK 5,70 for 1 USD.

Yes, our prices are high but we compensate that with high wages, also for people coming in from other countries. The overwhelming majority can afford what they like and live where they want.

Why does McD struggle in our market? Because there are too few Norwegians eating that food. We eat lots of fish, pasta, but also some junk.

You cannot be serious? Beer bought in pubs, etc. cost from USD 7,50 to 14,00 for 0,5 litre. Some cheaper in shops. 1 litre water in shops USD 3,20, but why pay when you can use the tap for free all over Norway, even when being in nature.

We have had some very few burnings in 20 years time. Almost every case has been solved and the arsonists brought to prison. Like in other countries you cannot easily control single bad guys from doing severe attacks on churches, specially wooden ones in less populated areas.
Black Metal has fans here, but they are not very keen on more than listening to that music.

When i read what you write, it looks like you never have been there. First of all you place Lillehammer in the fare north, when it actually placed i n the south part of the country. I’m born and raised in Oslo, but lived 5 years near Lillehammer, and the town does not look any thing like its portrayed in the series. Next you called the place Vinstra “a town”, when its barely an train station. And then you go on saying: The city is usually safe until 6 PM, when the government-mandated curfew starts. What are you talking about? There have not been any curfew in Norway since the WWII, and that was initiated by the Germans.

2. The Bible has nothing in it about America having the best understanding of it.

Breivik did not solve any problems, he created some big ones, killing 77 people, wounding seriously the double and blowing away the headquarter of our Government. We are not thinking of him as a Christian warrior but only as a terrorist with a sick mind. Norway never invited the Germans to conquer us. We fought for around 40 days, same as France, I think. The destroyer “Blücher was shot and sunk near Oslo and our government and royal family managed to escape to England and Canada. The invation lasted for five years, and several quislings were shot after their trial. We still fight Nazi’s and their sympaties here.
But luckily we had a modern and the biggest commercial fleet in the world at the time we were attacked. The ships were a major part for fighting the conquerer from outside. The Liberty ships and the Norwegian ships made a huge help to beat the Axis powers.

We have been both places for quite some years, have done a good job, but will go home within the next two years.
After ten years of struggle and war and no acceptable solution for the people there, I think it is better to let the inhabitants of those countries organize their own lives from now on. We have not been able to do it for them.
In the meantime I hope the upcoming peace discussions will lead to a democracy in both places, but based on the inhabitants’ desires and needs, not what we outsiders demand them to choose. They should also have their own will and their meaning of freedom, just like in the US.

A lot of writers here are either describing satirical comments (coming from genuine Norwegians) or they fake to be a native from our country. It is easy to mislead other nations inhabitants specially when they did not know very much in advance about our status and way of living.
I do not bother very much about our number in the lists mentioned here, as that position does not make any effect on our standard of life. I only know Norway is a very prosperous country and gives most people here plenty of joy and happiness during the years to come, as it also has been experiences for many years, both under Labour/socialists’ and Concervatives governments.
Together with Sweden we have one of the best free social health care systems both for general purposes and also as to all arrangements with letting mothers and fathers have holidays with their newborn babies for months after birth. It gives our new families plenty opportunities to both parents taking care of their babies and their homes.
In the long run you might be “Look to Norway” as Franklin D. Roosevelt announched in a major speeach in 1942: “If there is anyone who still wonders why this war is being fought, let him look to Norway. If there is anyone who has any delusions that this war could have been averted, let him look to Norway; and if there is anyone who doubts the democratic will to win, again I say, let him look to Norway.”. I hope you will agree. In the long run you will envy us such way of life as we have gained nowadays.
I was warned by Americans in advance but even so I felt really sad/depressed when I visited Michigan last summer and made a short stop in Detroit. I think you people lack a understanding of atheism so let me clarify.
In our society the human psyche has (in my opinion) 3 primary levels. The first level is apparent joviality, jokes, hobbies, fun things. The second level however is sadness, the drudgery of everyday life, work, family, all that. And there is also sadness in bad things you see happening, wars, human rights violations, racism, murder. However under that there is a third level, inner happiness, the kind you can only get from deeper things, like helping others. This is where atheism and theism split off, theism tries to bring meaning to this third layer with religion, faith in something greater, and hope of an afterlife. Atheism however brings meaning through the things that are all around us, primarily this has to do with human connection, friends, family, helping others, for atheists the thing greater than ourselves is not god, but the community. For atheists (and potentially buddhists) the way to find meaning is by believing in your self and others, by making other people happy, by living a life that is good for the world and yourself. This is part of the reason I am a brony, all the ethical values brought up in MLP breach the second layer of the psyche and show that helping others and friendship is the right thing to do, and that counteracts the bad things in the world. Thanks for all your writing here. Like I have said before here; I have had and have many good American friends for more than 20 years. I appreciate most of your pride, manners, wanting to help, and thoughts about freedom etc.
But like many foreigners I dislike the phrases about somebody trying to help other nations when you don’t know anything about the background basics to take right decisions before acting and also in accordance with the people you want to help.
Some of the leaders in USA have put many, many nations and people in a worse situation than needed. I am afraid they will do that also in the future, because they act far too fast instead of listening and THINKING carefully first. Oil resources and weapon industry are great forces when many decisions are taken in your country. Understandable, but not acceptable.
