Alabama Farm Family Helps Community

INTRO: A southeastern Alabama farm family is getting help from USDA to make their operation more efficient and environmentally friendly. In turn they are helping local youth and low income people. The USDAs Bob Ellison has more. (1:39)THE SHIPMAN FARM IN SOUTHEASTERN ALABAMA HAS BEEN IN THE FAMILY SINCE THE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY. AND TO HELP MODERNIZE IT, THE SHIPMANS PARTNERED WITH THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURES NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE. THROUGH THE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY INCENTIVES PROGRAM, N-R-CSHELPED INSTALL AN EFFICIENT WATERING SYSTEM TO RAISE PRODUCE AND LIVESTOCK.Jimmy Hatcher USDA NRCS: So we discussed different ways of maybe watering the goats and we felt like the well would be the best way to go, especially since they wanted to use the well for the micro-irrigation.Barbara Shipman, Barbour County, AL Farmer: Having the NRCS plan implement the micro-irrigation system has helped us tremendously because we were able to produce a better crop with the watermelons this year. And with the micro-irrigation system we would be able to produce more collard greens, turnip greens and the lettuce and mixed greens for the market.IN TURN, THE SHIPMANS USED THEIR INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY TO RESTART A FARMERS MARKET.Shipman: The majority of the customers that shop here are senior citizens and many of them do not drive so I feel that this is a great asset to them.THEY ALSO CONTRIBUTED TO FOUR-H TO HELP AREA YOUTH.Andrew Williams, USDA NRCS: The Shipmans loaned the goats to the youths to raise and to show for four-h.Shipman: We have the four-h master garden program and the students are able to plant vegetables they can sell at the farmers market and buy thing to enhance our four-h clubs. An idle mind is the devils workshop, but as long as our kids are doing things that are positive then the chances are better for them not to go to prison and to get into trouble that they cant get out of. . FOR THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, IM BOB ELLISON.

How the States Got Their Shapes

How the States Got Their Shapes

Why does West Virginia have a finger creeping up the side of Pennsylvania? Why are California and Texas so large when so many of the states in the Midwest are roughly the same size and shape? Why are Alabama and Mississippi almost exact mirror images of each other?Mark Stein provided answers to these questions, and many more, when he discussed and signed his new book, “How the States Got Their Shapes,” in a program sponsored by the Center for the Book. The author used the Library’s Geography and Map Division and other Library resources in his research. The map of the United States is so familiar that its state borders seem as much a part of nature as mountains and rivers, Stein says. “How the States Got Their Shapes” is the first book to explain why state lines are where they are. Anecdotal in nature, the guide reveals the moments in American history that put the giant jigsaw puzzle of the nation together.Speaker Biography: Mark Stein is a playwright and screenwriter. His plays have been performed off-Broadway and at theaters around the country. His films include “Housesitter” with Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn. He has taught writing and drama at American University and Catholic University and lives in Washington, D.C.

First Human Drug from Genetically Engineered Animals Approved

First Human Drug from Genetically Engineered Animals Approved

FDA recently approved the first biological product made from genetically engineered animals. The product, called ATryn, is an anticoagulant used to prevent blood clots in patients with a rare disease known as hereditary antithrombin deficiency. These patients can develop blood clots during high-risk situations such as surgery and childbirth. The approval gives patients with this disease an important new treatment option.ATryn is a therapeutic protein made from the milk of genetically engineered goats. These goats have had a segment of DNA introduced into their genes that causes the female goats to produce human antithrombin in their milk. FDA’s approval prohibits using these animals for food or feed, and also ensures that the genetic modification is not harming the animals. The manufacturer will continue to monitor the product’s safety, including the possible development of immune responses in patients who receive repeated ATryn treatments. The product is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2009.FDA Patient Safety News: May 2009For more information, please see our website:http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/psn/transcript.cfm?show=86#1
