Edison Kinetoscopic Record of a Sneeze, Jan. 7, 1894

The earliest surviving copyrighted motion picture, the Edison Kinetoscopic Record of a Sneeze is a short film made by W. K. L. Dickson in January 1894 for advertising purposes. Often referred to as “Fred Ott’s Sneeze,” this is is one of the world’s earliest motion pictures and America’s best known early film production. The star is Fred Ott, an Edison employee known to his fellow workers in the laboratory for his comic sneezing and other gags. This item was received in the Library of Congress on January 9, 1894, as a copyright deposit from Dickson. Two other Edison experimental films on the Library’s YouTube site – DICKSON GREETING (May 1891) and NEWARK ATHLETE (May or June 1891), predate The Sneeze. The Sneeze was submitted for copyright as 45 frames from the motion picture printed as positive prints on paper rather than as a reel of film. The prints were mounted on cardboard and submitted to the Copyright Office in this form. The video of the Sneeze on loc.gov and YouTube was later rephotographed and turned into a moving image from these mounted frames.SUMMARYFilm made for publicity purposes, as a series of still photographs to accompany an article in Harper’s weekly.OTHER TITLESSneeze Fred Ott’s sneeze CREATED/PUBLISHEDUnited States : Edison Manufacturing Co., 1894.NOTESCopyright: W. Fifty People, One Question | Short Film

February 15, 2009 1:55 amComments Off

Check out more HD videos, in partnership with Crush + Lovely & Deltree at http://fiftypeopleonequestion.comand now at http://YouTube.com/50People1QuestionFollow me on twitter @ http://twitter.com/benjaminreeceThe Story:Around two months ago when we set out to film, it was another New Orleans day. A sure sign was the radiating humidity that made your entire body feel like it was covered in a sort of sweaty film. Once you get past the initial fear of the inevitable grime and heat, you feel a certain energy or “atmosphere”- like a kid throwing himself without reserve into a mud fight. We had an idea: ask as many people as possible the same question. We didn’t know exactly why- I guess we were hoping to expose a slice of human emotion (maybe). Just the simple act of reaching out and asking the question is such a enthralling experience in itself. So go ahead, ask yourself…..http://thedeltree.orghttp://crushlovely.comThe Specs:Shot on an HV20 with a 35mm adapter, Worley/DIY. Indifocus rails on a Matthews M25 tripod. Nikon e series 50mm 1.8. Shure PG81 into a Zoom h4 unit. Boom Operator = Tung Bach Ly. “On location” in New Orleans, LA. Magazine St.

Food Fight

An abridged history of American-centric warfare, from WWII to present day, told through the foods of the countries in conflict. For a breakdown of the actual battles portrayed in the film, visit:http://www.touristpictures.com/foodfight/index.htmFor the official cheat sheet (breakdown of the foodstuffs), visit:http://www.touristpictures.com/foodfight/cheat.htmNow, to answer some FAQs…- The food in this film was consumed either by myself or my dog after shooting. None of the cast went to waste.- The software used was photoshop and after effects.- The film took me 3 months to do.- Although it seems like stop motion, most of it was stop motion created within After effects, using keyframe animation. I am basically moving the food around within the the program, frame by frame, which is the same as traditional stop motion, only it’s digital.
